ArTree is an art magazine that nurtures and grows your child's creativity.
ArTree is a new art magazine for kids. Its mission: nurture and grow their creativity. My mission: raise enough money for the first year (6 issues).
Every issue is filled with creative art projects, games, and activities. Six times a year (or more often, if we get more funding), we will introduce famous artists, art techniques and concepts to the budding artists.
In the first issue (about color), there will be four basic projects, numerous games and a lot of activities you can do together. One of the main four projects is going to look like this:
It will explain who Henri Matisse was and why he “painted with scissors.” Your kids will learn about collage, the difference between geometrical and organic shapes, about fauvism, and the emotions behind colors. They will do a step-by-step project and see different examples of collages that they can do on their own (we always include variations of the project to spark their creativity). They will also color one of Matisse’s famous paintings in two different ways to see the difference color can make in the way we see things. And they will be encouraged to go online to see similar projects and learn more about Matisse and his paintings. On our website, they will also find a list of recommended books and materials (if they want to learn more).
With so many public schools not being able to offer art programs for the kids, art education can be challenging. True, there are many options for the parents: books, Internet resources, art classes… but these can be very time consuming or expensive. ArTree is filling this gap. For only $25 a year, you get 6 issues of a magazine that is filled with pre-screened and heavily kid-tested projects - centered around one simple theme. It is easy to understand, the materials used in the magazine are things you probably already have at home, and there are no ads, just art.
I am an art director with background in child education and psychology. I love art and ever since my kids were born, I was trying to teach them how to appreciate it and, of course, how to create it. I created hundreds of projects and lesson plans and decided that a magazine is the best way to share it with everybody. After all, which kid does not like to get their own mail?
There are no good or bad ways to do art, in my book. I believe that art is a form of expression of ourselves, not just mere copying of others. I do not try to teach kids to paint the same way Picasso did… I merely use the artists and projects to spark their curiosity and creativity. I introduce the artists to talk about concepts, techniques and then show numerous variations of it to truly spark kids' creativity and curiosity. I want them to be confident in their skills and have a lot of fun in the process. And if they create a stunning masterpiece in the process, all the better.
So, please help us make this project a reality. Spread the word so that we can spread the creativity.

I am very excited and confident about this project and do not expect any major setbacks. The content of the first issue has been produced and is in the final stages of proof-reading and polishing.
The digital copies may be available in April/May and I believe that the physical copies of the magazine will not be shipped later than May. The only things that may take longer would be the customizable rewards that require collaboration... but it should not interfere with the launch of the first issue. I’ve prepared for a lot of possible problems and am very confident there will be no major hick-ups along the way. I can’t wait to get started.
