Update #8: We Don't Want to Jinx Ourselves But...

Posted on August 27, 2009

Dear Kickstarters--

We made our target!

The vinyl will be made!

Adam has changed his mind about leaving the band!

My face has cleared up!

A bill collector representing my doctors office woke me up with the news that *they* made an error!

I haven't seen a bug in my apartment in 36 hours!

The boric acid powder I laid down in the cracks and around the perimeter of my apartment irritates my skin but only a little!

Thank you so much!

There will be more information once September 1, the official close of the campaign, comes around. And if you know anyone else interested in *success*, we will gladly accept his/her donation until then too.

Thank you again for making this happen.

Nick/Mr. Dream

Update #7: September 20

Posted on August 24, 2009

Dear Kickstarters--

Great news: We are only $150 away from our campaign target. Amazing--and we still have a week left. We're thrilled and honored that you believe in this project so much. Thank you again for your contributions. There are still two lifetime guest-list slots available!

For anyone in the New York area: If you find yourself in town on Sunday, September 20, we are filming our first music video that afternoon and would love to have you in it. It is for the song "No Pressure," and my brother Anthony Sylvester, who helped produce our pitch video, will be co-directing. Some shooting will take place at Cake Shop, a venue in the Lower East Side. Without getting too deep into it, there will be other spots as well.

If you're interested in stopping by, let us know! Email mrdreamnyc@gmail.com for more info.

Many thanks,
Nick/Mr. Dream

Update #6: Preview: Liner Notes

Posted on August 19, 2009

Hello Kickstarter!

I am excited to share with you an excerpt from the liner notes of MR. DREAM GOES TO JAIL. They were written somewhere on the West Coast by Zach Kanin, a New Yorker cartoonist who moonlights as the rock journalist Curtis Hanson.

I first encountered Hanson's work when he wrote, on spec, a 6000-word travelogue piece for the Rodd Keith # of the Harvard Lampoon. For several days (maybe weeks? it's unclear), Hanson followed cult act The Gingerbread Men on a nationwide tour that, for several thousand words, took a dream-like journey into Faulkner's South. Three years later, he wrote a year-end piece for the music blog Riffmarket. These liner notes are, from what I gather, the first we've seen of Hanson since late 2007. As promised, here is an excerpt:

//
I’ve met these guys. I know these guys. These guys aren’t Mick Jagger. Hell, Mick Jagger isn’t even Mick Jagger anymore—he’s a middle-aged housewife from Brookline who watches The View to get the day’s top stories. I should know. I’ve met him too. But these guys aren’t Billy Idol—these guys aren’t even Bonnie Raitt. These are the kind of guys who have sex with their girlfriends a couple times and take ‘em to a magical weekend at a bed and breakfast before they introduce ‘em to their friends. And yet when these guys play…

Have you ever had your ear blasted off by a circular saw? Has anyone ever lathed your skin off your body? I mean, fucking, LATHED it off? Well that is the kind of fucked-up shit that happens in those “Saw” movies. I shit you not. People have to cut off their own hands. I can’t even imagine what I would do in that situation. Which is why it’s so fucked up. It’s like, what would you do? If you were there?

That’s what listening to these guys play is like.
//

Thank you so much for your support.

Update #5: Album Cover!

Posted on August 17, 2009

Hello!

First, an enormous thank-you to everyone who made donations last week, some of them coming in mere seconds after you received our emails. The song attached was good but not that good, you know? Maybe you thought the phasing in the snare drum was an intentional artistic decision? Either way, we are thrilled to have your support.

This morning we received final proofs of the album cover. See below! It was conceived by the New York artist Rob Dubbin, who photographed us in costume, in the Chelsea neighborhood, on whichever night it was that the Grateful Dead played Madison Square Garden this spring. There is a 99% possibility that this cover is the best seven-inch cover of all time. Those of you who donated $100 or more can look forward to other photographs that Rob put together from the shoot. We are deeply honored to have worked with him.

Thanks again!

Update #4: Snippets

Posted on August 7, 2009

Hey Kickstarter--

In a move that will remind some of you of that John Cheever short story where the husband, in celebratory anticipation of getting a new job, spends a ton of his savings on fancy dinners and apartment furniture--only to not get the job after all, thus putting his family in extreme financial distress--in a move reminiscent of that, Mr. Dream is delighted to report that we recorded a few songs last weekend in Brooklyn, and have been mixing them this week.

We have some tweaking to do before mastering next Wednesday, but wanted to share with you our progress. Below are snippets of four songs you'll hear on Mr. Dream Goes To Jail. They're unmastered, so you'll have to crank the volume a bit. We hope you don't feel ripped off.

Thank you for your support!

Nick

Update #2: Recording Snare Drum.

Posted on July 20, 2009

There is a lot of debate on the internet about recording the snare drum sound. Some people suggest two mics, one on the bottom, one on the top; others suggest a low-impedance mic run through a crossover; others suggest going "snare-free."

I'm excited to report that I have found the ultimate microphone setup for recording snare drum. If you like big, explosive 70s rock snares, set up one of these bad boys, fifty feet away from the drum:

All--

We are beyond thrilled to pass the 10% mark already--only two days since project launch. Thank you so much to our backers, who together have sponsored our record for more than $400.

Mr. Dream began recording in Williamsburg this last Monday. Below are some photos of us in our rehearsal space, taken by Win Ruml. Come back for more updates on the record and Mr. Dream!
