Hey folks - we're making t-shirts to support our second issue, and also for fun. You can vote on 1 of 4 designs here and they'll be up for pre-sale tomorrow. Let us know what you like!
We have some great ideas lined up for issues #2 and #3 -- look for our second issue toward the end of the year. You can pick up issue #1 right here.
Thanks for your support!
David / UNCOOL
Since the Monday release of our first digital zine, we've released some articles from it to preview before you download the issue:
See what pages from the issue look like in an excerpt from Devon Maloney's essay on Something Corporate, feminism and teen angst.
Read Henry Adaso's sharp piece on Rick Ross, Rap and Responsibility in full.
Read an excerpt from Guiltless Pleasures: Imagining a Post-Snob World, a transcript/reenactment of my SXSW panel on the subject with Lindsay Zoladz and Simon Vozick-Levinson.
You can download the full 43-page issue on Bandcamp. Thanks again for your support, and let us know what you think of the first issue!
We made you a zine.
After the Kickstarter, some of us decided to put together a new project, one that wouldn't take a whole year. Just a couple of months. We chose a theme, Guiltless Pleasures, and gathered essays ranging from Rick Ross' hip-hop cred to reclaiming teenage emo memories to, uh, a very important Soundgarden concert. This is a magazine about how listening to music makes us feel bad, or proud, or everything in between.
Issue #1 is a 43-page .pdf file featuring eight articles. You can buy it on Bandcamp and read it on your computer, tablet or phone. The writers include Devon Maloney, Jamieson Cox, David Greenwald, Simon Vozick-Levinson, Lindsay Zoladz, Melody Lau, Henry Adaso, Taleen Kalenderian and Jillian Mapes. Everyone who contributed to this, from the writers to the cover artist, was paid for their work. If we sell enough copies of this one, we'll make some more.
You proved to us that people want to support thoughtful, open-minded music writing. That means a lot. We hope this collection will mean a lot to you. Thanks again.
We're not sure yet -- maybe it's "nothing." We hope not. David wrote a goodbye letter on our Tumblr with links to all of our writers' sites and Twitter pages, so please follow them for plenty of great journalism in the future.
Again, thank you so much. We tried to do an ambitious thing and we're proud we tried and that you were part of it.
Kickstarter doesn't let us take home your emails -- if you'd like to stay in touch, shoot us an email at email@example.com and we'll let you know when the next project comes. And if you have any ideas, hey, let us know! We're all ears. If you're in L.A., we would also like to buy you an adult beverage -- we owe you.
Cheers. Here's to 2013.
