Abstract Painter Seeks Funds to Kick Start the Final Painting of a Series.
My name is Nathan Miner and I’m an artist based in the Boston area. For the last decade I’ve been developing a studio process that combines painting, drawing, photography and digital printmaking to create layered abstractions based on existing environments and natural patterns.
I tend to focus of the fringes of understanding, where stories we tell about the world become the most inventive. In general my paintings are about these fringe territories and their precarious paths, where we lose and then find ourselves again. It’s a process that’s fundamental to who all of us are – a romance with the unknown.
Last year I successfully completed my first large-scale painted installation and titled it Echoes Embrace. Created for an interior corner, the work is seven feet tall and 20 feet long, and comprised of 12 separate panels. To begin its preliminary composition, I used large format digital printing to transcribe tonal architectural forms onto large sheets of watercolor paper. I then joined the sheets to aluminum-faced panels and reworked the composition with pencil, watercolor, gouache, airbrush and acrylic paints before sealing it with shellac. I finished the work with oil paint.
Today I am about half way through another large installation, which has the working title The Field Reflections. It is the most ambitious project I’ve ever undertaken and I am approaching it by scaling up the process I used to create Echoes Embrace. The Field Reflections will consist of two equally sized paintings that face one another and share many compositional elements, like walls in a hall of mirrors. The difference here will be that, instead of reflecting physical bodies, imagery of the two paintings will open themselves to the mental projections of the viewer. With this work I am seeking to create an elaborate, illusory and seductive visual experience in which a viewer’s imagination can expand in two directions – to the fringes of what is real and what is simply believed.
Through this campaign I’m hoping you’ll join me in the process of making The Field Reflections a success. The $3,000 goal will help me secure materials and studio time to complete this installation. Any additional funding generated will assist me in promoting and exhibiting this work upon completion.
