Taking an used 1980's model van and transforming it into Hutch's Van from 'Fanboys'. The project will be filmed to show the process.
I want to take a 1980's Chevy van and transform it into Hutch's Van from the movie 'Fanboys'. I am a Machinist Apprentice at a theme park in Anaheim, I have taken numerous classes in auto and machining in this apprenticeship, and have had on hand experience in the field of maintenance. I have a team of designers and mechanics to help with the process and a friend whom has personal experience with modifying the cars into Star Wars vehicles, Shawn Crosby. The process will involve a lot of time in recreating the modifications made to the original van. Including the R2D2 dome on the Roof, the artwork and painting of the interior and exterior, making/finding all of the bumper stickers, changing the dashboard into the Millennium Falcon style with all the knobs and levers. Then the van needs to be Registered, pass smog in the State of California and am hoping to get the personalized plate SLAVE2 or a variation, so we can get this van as close as possible to screen accurate.
The whole process will be filmed and made into a documentary, broken up into episodes that I can upload to Youtube, to keep the Van's status up to date with all of the projects Fans. This Documentary will start with the design, hunting for the van, the purchase, mechanical work, painting, registration, fabrication of parts as well as it's unveiling and first event. I want everyone to know what kind of time and hardwork goes into the process of not only rebuilding a used car, but also transforming it into a cult film icon. The project should take about a year, but I am hoping for a couple of months so I can move onto my next project a fully operation Death St.... I mean R2D2 unit.

The plan is for the van to be part as many sci-fi and charity events that will have it. Also to join the star cars club of Los Angeles and the Rogue Squadron.

It gives me the ability to work on a car that is not my main mode of transportation. It is a fun project, that will reinforce my schooling and gives me the ability to be creative with how we can modify the van. Also it opens the door to many more charity events that I can help be a part of.

The van itself is going to cost a couple thousand, then I will have to go pick up the van (gas for 2 cars, food, motel6 = a few hundred, any mechanical issues (possibly thousands), possibly new tires (minimum of $600), then interior modifications (again possibly thousands), then smog (minimum of $50), smog modifications(van will most likely come from out of state, possibly hundreds), registration(possibly a few hundred), Specialty plate(extra $70). So $10,000 is actually a low ball number for a project like this. My grandfather refurbished a classic 1950s Chevy truck and it cost him way over $10,000.
