The Constellation Song is an animated film based on characters created in a series of recent paintings.
Concept and Story
"The Constellation Song" is a short, animated film based on characters and landscapes featured in many of my most recent paintings; The characters are anthropomorphic and slightly ethereal yet highly sentient. The story, though not entirely linear, is in essence about the creation of a living constellation.
Much like the inhabitants of my earlier films, the characters in "The Constellation Song" live in a world of their own perception. Still, their existence is very real, and their decisions and actions directly affect the continuation of both the story and their own lives.
Filmmaking ProcessI've been making stop-motion films for several years, with a focus on interpreting the emotions and reactions of innocent creatures confronted with the profound inevitablilities and mysteries of the wider world; this is done with evocative, pastel scenery and characters that are cute but self-aware enough to understand and relate these deeper mysteries.
In order to create a unique sense of place and atmosphere, I am pushing the boundaries of my own abilities with this film. In the past, I've mostly used hand-sewn dolls and puppets to "act" on large-scale sets with painted backgrounds. Although I will still be using dolls and sets for "The Constellation Song", the look and feel of the film will be created through a variety of modern film and animation techniques. I'm also using the paintings themselves as a startoff point, expanding the backgrounds to allow camera motions and pans over the surrounding sky and water.
How the Funds Will Be Used
Animation can be incredibly time-consuming - a 6-minute film can take anywhere from 3 months to a year to finish, and sometimes more. Although I hope to be finished somewhere in the 3-6 month range, that's still a lot of time for unexpected expenses to occur, particularly with the upkeep of equipment and data storage.
Primarily, however, funding will go toward building the set and the space where I will be filming. I'll be using my own Canon T1i to film this project, but access to current Animation software (Dragonframe, in particular) would help save time and ensure the highest possibly image quality.
Any remaining funds will be put toward getting the film into festivals and galleries both nationally and internationally. This is another post-production process that can be very costly but it's absolutely necessary if you want to share your film with the world.
Why You Might Want To Be a Part of This
1. If you have ever wanted to know how stop-motion animation and modern editing techniques work together, you will have first-hand access to updates from the production of this film, from the creation of the dolls and set to the filming itself.
2. If you already know all about animation and filmmaking, this is a great opportunity to help and even mentor a deeply-dedicated up-and-coming artist and filmmaker.
3. Most of the Pledge Level rewards are unique pieces of art that are both collectible and great as gifts.
4. This is not really a children's movie but there's nothing a child won't be able to watch or appreciate in it; it is truly suitable for all ages.
The Preview Video
At the top of this page is the first trailer for the film, featuring backgrounds and some test animations. Portions of this can be seen in "The Holy Isle", a 3-channel animated video premiering at Fourth Wall Gallery in Boston, April 3rd and 4th 2012.
