We are so excited to bring you this conversation with Edy Boone. It has been created thanks to your generosity. You can follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Be sure to click the LIKE button on the Facebook page to receive all news about A New Color.
This clip gives you a glimpse into Edy's amazing personal art work. Edy's public legacy lives in the large scale buildings and walls of the Bay Area, but she also has an extensive body of personal art work. You can find her work in several publications, including on the cover of "Voices of the Dream: African-American Women Speak" edited by Venice Johnson (1996). We take pride in being in the forefront of documenting Edy's art in film while exposing this outstanding artist and human being to the public.
Thank you for your support.
And, now we would like to share a story. Recently, Berwood Hedge parent Sharon Amacher shared a beautiful experience that she had with Edy:
"Edy is so much more than an art teacher. I remember very clearly her words at a [Berkwood Hedge] Diversity Committee event that I attended on the topic of white privilege. When Edy spoke, my heart stood up and listened. She said something like "Not a single day did I kiss my children goodbye in the morning, and not worry whether they would come home alive in the evening, so that I might kiss them again." That's all she said, not in an angry voice, but in a clear voice speaking her plain truth. And, while many powerful things were said that evening, nothing reached me more than her words, because I had never, ever kissed my children goodbye, on any ordinary morning, and wondered if they would be alive at the end of the day. Edy, this amazing, vivacious, strong, beautiful woman I admired, who I figured was not afraid of anything, because her gutsy attitude, her smile, her warmth, her infectious laugh that makes you think her invincible. That was Edy's reality every day."
Please share your stories about Edy with us.
With over $3,400 raised in the first 12 days of the campaign, you are making clear to the world that you support our efforts to establish the legacy of one of the Bay Area's artistic gems.

In the creation of art, many restorative forces are revealed. For elders, the painting process can be both physically and emotionally rejuvenating. In the following clip, we see how Edy uses creativity to keep herself vibrant. And how she teaches others the magic that art can bring to one's health. Please enjoy this sneak preview of another scene -- "I'm not fragile" -- from this work-in-progress. Talk about a CAN-DO attitude!
Warmly,
Mo
I just wanted to let you know that in less than 4 days we reached the 22% mark! We are hard at work getting the word out about the film and making the connections to those who are passionate about healthy lifestyles for elders, arts education, and creating positive change in communities that can benefit from it the most. Oh - and preserving the legacy of Edy Boone's life and work!
A few weeks ago, we premiered work-in-progress scenes from the film to a sardine packed room of families, community organizers, educators, muralists, elders, youth, and many others at Berkwood Hedge School where Edy has taught for 12 years. And the reception was wildly enthusiastic.
Berkwood Hedge teacher, Hanan Masri, said: "As we watched footage of the film that sunny afternoon, many in the crowd were moved to tears to learn how Edy continues to create "murals with meanings" in Richmond, San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland and to inspire us all to be the change we want to see in the world. Looking at footage of Edy as a young girl, listening to her as she coaxes a tentative student into realizing her own talent, and taking in the countless testimonies of people whose lives she's touched made me realize right then and there that this film will undoubtedly be an important part of history. In essence, it will forever preserve the beauty, power and message of one phenomenal woman whom we all know and love."
In the near future, we will be sharing some media coverage about Edy and the film, more stories, other fantastic links about the arts and education, and more about the contemporary elder community. We invite you to comment, and share pictures and stories about Edy, healthy living tips for seniors, public art, and articles that would help our campaign. You can send us a message or images through the Kickstarter site or email us at ANewColor.doc@gmail.com.
Together, we can raise the funds needed and make this documentary a reality.
In the last week we were able to share some important videos, stories, and pictures about Edy Boone’s life and art.
Following is a quick recap and links that we shared on our facebook page:
