With some time over the Thanksgiving holiday to reflect, I found myself feeling so grateful to all of you for believing in us and in the need for this story.
We are really doing it! And we think A New Color will make a difference in how inner city youth imagine their life choices, how older people see opportunities for healthy aging and passing on their wisdom to the next generation, and how society remembers an influential African American artist, arts educator, and activist. Everywhere she goes, Edy's leads and empowers people to believe in themselves and act courageously. But nowhere is her example more important than in underserved communities like the West Oakland and Richmond scenes featured in this film.
We are nearly done shooting (who-hoo!) and are excited to start spending time in the edit room. Reviewing recently acquired footage, I chuckled at the connection Edythe has with young people and marveled at the impact of her legacy.
This work-in-progress clip introduces you to one such young person. Meet Ariana Román, a muralist who is deeply honored to be on the team working alongside Edythe and the other veteran muralists to restore the “MaestraPeace” mural on The Women’s Building in San Francisco’s Mission District. Crediting youth art programs with keeping her “focused,“ Ariana earned a degree in Visual and Public Art at California State University and returned to her native San Francisco to provide “opportunities like [she] had to other young people.”
I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the treasure trove that will become A New Color, thanks to generous donations from individuals like you and grants from the Berkeley FILM Foundation and the East Bay Community Fund.
We are actively seeking funds for the post-production (editing) phase and would be extra grateful if you could share this project and our facebook fan page with anyone you think might be interested in helping out. Tax-deductible donations can be made via our fiscal sponsor, San Francisco Film Society online or by mail at 39 Mesa Street, Suite 110, The Presidio, San Fransicso, CA 94129 (write "A New Color" in the memo line).
Thank you a million times over for joining us in producing this film. We couldn't be doing it without your support.
May you have a happy and healthy holiday season.
Mo Morris and the entire A New Color Team
