About this project
We're having an old-fashioned greenhouse raising!
In our first season we sprouted all of our seeds in the basement and grew seedlings on our tiny south-facing enclosed porch. It got crowded. We're grateful to have even that much space, but to make this business work what we really need is a greenhouse.
In a lot of ways, a greenhouse is the heart of a small farm like ours. It'll give us somewhere to grow seedlings in the spring, provide extra warmth for heat-loving crops like melons, and allow us to extend our harvest well into winter. It will also help our bottom line, meaning we'll be able to provide more food to more people at even better prices.
We'll be purchasing a 22' x 48' greenhouse from a company called GroWell in nearby Cheshire, CT, and putting it up ourselves with the help of friends and family. The greenhouse will be anaerobically heated; a manure pit in the middle of the greenhouse will keep the temperature toasty during cold winter nights, so we'll only need to use energy-intensive traditional heaters a few days a year. The entire amount of funding we receive will go towards purchasing and putting up the greenhouse.
Kickstarter funding is all-or-nothing, which means if we aren't funded for the full $3000, we don't get any of it. That means that your support, at any level, will have a huge impact on our ability to provide our community with affordable, nutritious produce next season, and for many, many years to come. We can't thank you enough.
