About this project
So let me tell you about The Gathering:
It started out with a group of songs I wrote for the North Carolina Symphony, which we will premiere in November 2011. I brought together an amazing group of traditional singers and players to help me tell the story: Rhiannon Giddens, Joe Newberry and Mike Compton.
When the string band got together we realized several things: that we really liked playing together, that we didn't want our collaboration to end, and that we wanted to go ahead and make a full-length holiday record, including several of Joe's beautiful originals and some classic holiday songs. We asked Jason Sypher to come play his amazing bass with us, brought in recording wizard JoeBass and then gathered in a cabin in the August woods to make a December record. Conventional record-label wisdom would say that we should wait until next year to release this record. We don't want to wait -- and we don't think you want us to, either!
We are asking for your support:
We are thrilled with the recording that came from our August sessions and are working hard to get it out in time for the 2011 holidays. That is why we are asking for your help -- releasing and publicizing a record this quickly is a challenge, and since this is not a regular touring band it will be harder for us to recoup recording and production expenses. This kickstarter campaign offers lots of great premiums including copies of the cd, show tickets, art prints, house concerts and more. Performances:
We have three performances with the North Carolina Symphony, scheduled for Nov. 25 and 26 at Meymandi Hall in Raleigh, NC. INFO
Tuesday December 6th we will perform (without the symphony!) at Greensboro's Triad Stage. We are working on a few more shows for December!

Joe, Laurelyn, Mike and Rhiannon are singing. Joe plays banjo and guitar, Mike plays mandolin and mandola, Rhiannon plays fiddle, Laurelyn plays guitar, and Jason plays bass.

The art:
The cover art is from a watercolor painted by dear friend and composer Kenneth Frazelle, who was very helpful to me during the writing process. We were talking about the song "Lights in the Lowlands." I told him that I picture his watercolors when I sing that line, and next thing I knew he had painted my vision of the winter night -- the lights in the lowlands.
