We've launched an exciting new project of our own! Introducing the Kickstarter app for iPhone!

A non-fiction writing project with the women and men of Appalachia to promote the conversation of energy consumption in America.

Where does your electricity come from? I answer this question during a two-year journey through Central Appalachia tracing the source of San Antonio's electricity to the foot of Black Mountain in Harlan County, Kentucky.

For the last two-years, I have collected over 25 hours of oral history and taught several writing workshops in the beautiful mountains of Appalachia.  While working with the men and women of Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia, I've discovered incredible stories, which I am encouraging them to write in their own words. Stories that would go untold otherwise.  The journey has taken me to the home places of many brave men and women, as they deal with the repercussions of coal mining.

WHAT YOUR FUNDING MEANS:

Your donations are essential to finish this book, as I move into the final stages of production and publication.  The funding will be used in three ways:  The first third will fund a return trip to Appalachia, where I will collect more oral history interviews, including scientists and historians that can apply the macro and micro lenses for context.  The return trip will include several writing workshops.  The second third will be used to fly San Antonio artists for a 4 day trip through Central Appalachia to visit MTR sites and listen to men and women in the mining regions.  This is going to be quite costly but the effect it will have on public dialog will be immeasurable.  The final third, will be used to publish the book itself.

Each dollar you send goes directly to increasing the awareness of where our energy sources come from.  If we raise more than our goal of $13,000, New Ground will expand the number of workshops and interviews.  Help us preserve history, conserve our environment, and create art.  Be a part of this interdisciplinary work!
