About this project
WHO WE ARE:
Camp Beaverton: Camp for Wayward Girls is an intentional (and experimental) Burning Man community camp AND conversation. For who? for Gay and Queer Women (identified), Dykes, Bykes, Sluts, Butches, Bois, Trannies, Lesbians, Geekster-Hip Lezzies, Lesbos, Lipstick Lesbians, the Bi-identified, the Bi-curious, the Hetero-flexible, the Gender-variant, and even (gasp!) the occasional Straight Girl (as long as she’s as Wayward as the Playa is dusty). We are thoroughly queer, yet inclusive, with a definite chick-centric bent. Participation, inquiry, conversation, and owning your shit are the name of the game.
Our intention is to provide two things: a kick-ass Queer oasis in Black Rock City for girls who LOVE girls, and a continuing conversation exploring female and feminine queer sexuality in the world and at Burning Man. Participatory in nature, Camp Beaverton, whether online or on the Playa, is a place where you are encouraged to explore YOUR expression of queerness and allow the rest of us to ask “What is MINE?”
Every year, approximately 40,000-50,000 people participate in Burning Man, living in the desert for one week and practicing radical self-reliance and inclusion in this desert city. Many people join camps, and these camps provide a smaller family environment for their campers, as well as providing entertainment and resources for the whole Burning Man community. Camp Beaverton is one of these camps, and a very important contribution to the Burning Man community for many people.
Our goal at Camp Beaverton is to provide an especially unique oasis to celebrate, honor, and support all of the queer, trans, and wayward women who participate in Burning Man. Started four years ago, Camp Beaverton not only strives to provide a safe space for women and trans/gender-variant people of all sexual orientations on the Playa, but also provides numerous sex and relationship workshops for the whole community. Some of our workshops in the past have included “Introduction to Girl Sex” and “Female Ejaculation” as well as a lesbian speed-dating event, to name only a few. Last year, there were at least 700 women and trans/gender-variant people that visited Camp Beaverton and took part in our events.
HOW YOUR DONATIONS WILL BE USED:
In 2010, we expect to have 35-40 women and trans/gender-variant people officially camping in Camp Beaverton, as well as at least 1000 women and tran/gender-variant people enjoying our workshops and shared spaced.
The event is built on ten important principles, one of which is the theory of a gifting economy. This means that there is no commodification at Burning Man, and everything contributed and brought for the community is brought there and gifted by the community. We are going to be providing alcohol, shade structures, lounging spaces, lighting, sound system, toys, and workshops for all these women and transpeople.
The funds raised from this Kickstarter will go directly to purchasing:
-A generator and all accessories (such as gas)
-Two speaker and sound system accessories
-Lighting for inside the shade structure and dome, and path throughout camp (for safety purposes and use at night)
-Interior Decor
WE OFFER A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL DONORS AND WELL-WISHERS!!
