Work/shop aims to create a space that combines a retail space with a learning environment where crafts can be demonstrated and learned as well as viewed in the completed products they create.
By creating a transparent, open process, work/shop will make a unique space in which the finished product is seen in relation to the craft and labor that has gone into it. This will allow people to step into the studio of their favorite makers, craftspeople, and inventors and see each step in the creative process. This will also create a space where people can work together with those that are teaching classes in order to create custom, original goods.
Regular classes will allow artisans to teach about what they do and promote their own work while sharing knowledge with a future generation of makers, creators, and teachers. Classes will be open to all ages with some workshops specifically geared toward teaching children.
Work/shop will also be a retail space the runs on a model of seasonal themes relating to specific materials, sources, or crafts. By running a for-profit retail space alongside a not-for-profit learning and teaching space, work/shop will become a self-sustained space for learning.
Your contributions to work/shop will allow me to begin renovating and outfitting a space that can encompass all of these ideas. The costs for the construction, design, and all of the little details that go into a project of this scale will be covered through this kickstarter campaign.

I grew up north of the Adirondacks in New York state, learning the basics of construction and carpentry from my father. I moved to NYC in 2000 to study painting at Pratt Art Institute and ended up transferring to The Cooper Union to finish my degree in fine art and design.
SInce 2004 I have had the incredible good fortune to start a business that allows me to make things for a living. Flux started as mainly tshirts but quickly moved into bags, wallets, shoes, and jewelry as I started exploring different types of production. Currently I have a studio in Fort Greene where you can find me most days and a regular spot at the Brooklyn Flea where you can check out everything that's new each week.
