A collection of Fine Art Photography based on the South African Townships of Khayelitsha & Dunoon. Beauty in a place you'd least expect
This project is based on my most recent trip to South Africa. I spent most of my time in the Western Cape near Cape Town. I went into the townships of Khayelitsha and Dunoon with a charitable organization that gave medical care to those in need and also helped to plant gardens and teach residents how to maintain those gardens as a food source.
Going into these destitute areas of the world, I expected to see people who were depressed, bitter and unwelcoming. What I found was the complete opposite. They were some of the nicest and most inviting people I had ever met. The people appreciated what little they had in life and wanted to share those things and their homes with anyone who wanted to get closer them.
I think many people see images like these on television and think the worst, or choose not to think about these people at all. My goal is to share these images as fine art and show how beautiful they are not only because of the subjects, but because of the texture and color in the communities.
As of right now, I will be having a show at 464 Gallery here in Buffalo, NY. I will be showing several of the strongest images enlarged and hanging on the wall. A collection of approximately 38 images will be included in the photography book with an index of short descriptions of each photo. The number of books printed will be limited to 250 MAX. This final number will largely depend on the success of the pledges received.
The idea behind this book is not to get famous, or sell it on Amazon, but to offer the images in a form that can showcase them as fine art, but also as a story. The money raised here will be used to pay for the cost of printing the books with a professional printer, which as of now is 'Edition One Books.' The pledges will also be used to help pay for the cost of putting on the show which includes prints for display and promotional materials to draw in a local audience for opening night.
