A documentary from DQYDJProductions about the exotic dancers of Bourbon Street & the dreams they have tucked away in their g-strings.

BOURBON STREET DREAMS

What’s It All About?

Bourbon Street Dreams is a documentary film focusing primarily on a local artist in New Orleans, LA.

Running away from home at the age of 16 and embarking on an adventure that covered 24 states and Mexico in seven weeks, Tina found herself in New Orleans with no money, no prospects and a crippling drug addiction.

When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, Tina was faced with a choice as she huddled with 3 others on a rooftop, withdrawing from crack addiction and waiting for the flood waters to wash her sins away: get busy living or end up another spray-painted number on the side of a house.  Determined to re-invent herself and achieve her goal of being a successful painter, Tina danced her way to sobriety in the dark, steamy clubs on Bourbon Street; selling her body to buy her dreams one g-string at a time.

“The sad part is I can introduce you to 10 girls on the street who are exactly like me,” Tina told me when I first met her in Spring 2012.  “We all have a dream to be something else but reality keeps bogging us down in nightmares.”

Meet Tina and the other dreamers in a documentary scheduled to film in January 2013 on location in New Orleans, LA.  Experience firsthand what these girls hold deep within their hearts hidden away from the leering eyes of tourists and drug pushers: an unapologetic hope that the future really will be brighter if only they can survive until tomorrow.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

As an NYC independent filmmaker with a fledgling production company (“Don’t Quit Your Day Job Productions”) tackling a documentary film in the Big Easy is a daunting task. But the film’s subject matter is a textbook example of life imitating art: I have dreams too, just like the girls on Bourbon Street. I just choose not to do it in a g-string. (Too cold during the night shoots!)

Challenges are always a part of a creative project. In our case we are working with various venues and establishments in New Orleans that may decide our point of view is in contrast with their own. Although we have potentially secured a filming schedule at several clubs on Bourbon Street this could change once January rolls around and we would be forced to delay shooting until the club owners either changed their minds or we secured alternate shooting locations.

Additionally, the subjects of the documentary come from a world much different than our own and although they have agreed to have their stories told in the film they may feel that sharing their deepest, darkest secrets might paint them in a different light than they see themselves. We have already had one delay based on lack of funding and a hesitancy from one of the characters to be portrayed in the film.

Currently pre-production is on schedule and filming will begin mid-January on location in New Orleans and we hope to complete the post-production/editing, etc. by March 2013.

This is your chance to get in on the ground floor of not the summer’s biggest blockbuster but a fascinating slice of Americana pie. Where else can a girl go from a teenage runaway to a drug addict drowning in the rushing levee waters to a stripper shaking her moneymaker to a painter who uses tears and oil to color her canvases? Only in America.
