Update #2: Getting Ready For San Antonio
I'm back from Provincetown and the Center for Family Connections' Meeting of the Minds conference. It was intense, to say the least. This was my first adoption conference, and, oddly, the first time I'd been around other adoptees (not to mention birth parents, adoptive parents, and so forth). The conference was sort of a crash-course in current adoption issues and, in terms of research, was invaluable. In terms of my own personal exploration of adoption, it also was invaluable, but in ways that I'm still figuring out. After 29 years of always having to explain my adoption to others, it was strange to be in a place where no explanation was necessary and everyone could relate to my story.
I'm in the process of transcribing notes and following up with some of the people I met at the conference. I'm also planning the next stage of this summer's research: a trip to San Antonio for the Adoptee Rights rally on Aug. 8. I'm booking plane tickets and looking for a place to stay. I'm also hoping that my phone will be working this time around (it crapped out spectacularly in Provincetown) and I'll be able to take some video of the rally.
Again, thanks to all of you for your support. I couldn't be doing this research without your help.
Update #1: Meeting of the Minds
It's only been a week and I'm already over the funding goal! I can't believe the generous response I've received from everyone. I'm extremely grateful for everyone's help and support!
Here's what's happening next: I'll be attending the Center for Family Connections' Meeting of the Minds conference in Provincetown, MA from July 10-12. (The conference runs until July 14, but the last two days are intensive workshops for clinicians.) I'm hoping to connect with adoptees, parents, and others and line up some interviews for the project. I plan to do some blogging of the conference, so check back here for updates, or swing on by my own site.
