Not a subway ride it's a journey... A documentary on "The Great Migration" circa 1915 How one family "rode on history"
Brooklyn to Harlem
is the title of my documentary.
In rural Alabama there's a small town named Brooklyn where my great-grandmother was born. She migrated from the South to Harlem, New York during the Great Migration in the first decade of the 20th century.
A small crew will travel to Brooklyn, and film me locating the birth-place of my great-grandmother and researching my family history in the neighboring counties of Conecuh, Escambia, and Evergreen Alabama back to slavery.
Funding for this project will be used for production of the short documentary, as well as on genealogical research, and large format photography of recorded and unrecorded historic structures and sites.
Brooklyn to Harlem is in the preliminary phase of planning and production. It has been a idea (seed) germinating for as far back as I can recall. The purpose of this project is personal fulfillment in learning the history of my maternal lineage, and to show that it is relatively easy, rewarding, fun, and exciting to learn about relatives and ancestors back several generations to periods in history that most of us have only read or imagined about.
The end result- product along with the short documentary, Brooklyn to Harlem, will be a "how to guide" (kit) on the steps of genealogy research, and documenting family history for posterity, and perhaps other uses. Such as, identifying sites of historic significance for Preservation, and recording oral, social, and public history.
The goal of this project is to show that anyone with a curiosity for finding out more about their family history can do so and enjoy doing it!
