The Particular Premiere of a First is an evening length multi-media performance piece that plays with the relationship between the human body and incomprehensible vastness. It will premiere at The Howard Gilman Performance Space, Baryshnikov Arts Center, New York, NY, on October 26 and 27, 2011. This work, which will combine dance, video, creative set design and live musical performance of original compositions, is loosely based on images and ideas derived from the Big Bang theory. This theory presents the idea that the universe began in a state of extreme heat and density, expanded rapidly, allowing it to cool, and continues to expand today at an accelerating rate. I see the Big Bang as a generator of visual, choreographic and musical imagery and concepts for my collaborators and myself to explore.

These ideas deal with a timeline, beginnings, vastness, stillness, exaggerated changes in time and space, the role of creator, evolution, surprise, umbilical cords, dreams, debris, and the ancient and the infantile. I envision a dense world on stage while maintaining structural simplicity and a sense of humor. The Costs:

Space rental for event: approximately $5,700

Dancers salaries: $10/hr. for rehearsals (comes to about $2,000 for full rehearsal period) + $300 for performances ($1,800 for all)

Musician salaries: $300 for performances

Choreography: $500

Direction: $600

Rehearsal space: about $450

Set design: $500

Set materials: $550

Costumes: $600

Video: $400

Composition and music: $500 each (2 composers)

Posters/postcards/promotional materials: $700
