SURVEY - Brand/Logo Treatment

Update #14 · Nov 14, 2011 · 24 comments

Hello backers,

As stated in the prior post we are keeping the logo.  As product managers you either believe in the value of brand or be ok white labeling the product and not care about establishing a brand presence.  This is an opportunity for us to start getting the brand out there.

We also stated that we'd look at other options for the brand treatment.  That effort has concluded with one other option.  We have tested etching the case first and anodizing over the etch and have received one sample.  This still maintains the brand while giving it a slightly subdued look.

Below are two links to images of the two treatments as well as a link to vote on which one is preferred.  Now to the methodology.

Whichever one is chosen is the one we will manufacture. There will be no mixed options or the ability to request the logo that doesn't receive the majority vote.

Ok, so what does "majority vote" mean?  This means we'll pick the treatment that has a 60/40 split.  If it's 59% then we are sticking with Logo 1 (Original design). That's pretty much an even split and we had to draw the line somewhere.

We don't have any other color samples of other case colors with the logo, nor will we . You'll have to make your decision based on our current samples.

The survey will close in 36-48hours.

@Jason I hope to see Orange and maybe green in the future. Maybe even a chrome plated one as well depending on it's durability. I'm purchasing this because I like the look. If I was looking for a secure iPhone I'd buy an OtterBox. I hope to see a wide choice of colors and maybe textures in the future from your guys. Maybe even a second gen of this case that gives a bit for protection around the front.

The team is exploring a variety of colors. However, we are still only offering 3 through KickStarter.

Wow, guys this is amazing! exactly what I (and obviously a lot of other backers) were hoping for. I might even consider backing for another one :)

I had a feeling that the vote would be in favor of the more subtle logo, but I didn't think it would be an 80/20 split with 600 votes. This tells me that a vast majority of backers would prefer that the logo be removed from the front and relocated. Maybe I am reading into this too much, but the shear number is quite impressive. This should also give you a good basis as to what the general public would like to see on your case as well. I understand that it is "your" case and "design", but I don't think most people are suggesting that you change the design. They are merely suggesting that you change the location of the logo. In the end, you are selling a product to the public and if a majority of the public doesn't like it then you won't be making any money from it and I am assuming you are creating this case to make money since you are concerned about your profit margins previously mentioned.

I personally like the logo and I think the case needs to be branded, BUT I would much rather see it on the back so the case can maintain the clean lines.

I am backing the project regardless of the outcome, but as a designer myself I feel that you need to be more receptive to the customer base and right now your backers are the customers and an 80/20 split would definitely raise the red flag if I was the "designer".

A great designer is someone who is open to visualizing there design from more than one perspective. You have a good design...can you make it great?

@Carlo just a general comment. Design by democracy isn't something we generally lean on during this phase of product development and generally I don't like to run product development by democracy. The color is a grayish that we were testing.

Thank you for the democracy Jason! Quick question:

[ Logo 2 ] Seams to be Grey / Gun metal color, is this a picture of the black model? Sample without paint? Or simply my perception of the lighting?

Voted for option 2, fingers crossed on a black color with washed out logo!

I posted this a while back. i+Case with a màs Element Titanium back cover mock-up :D

@Jordan 600 votes are in and we are at an 80/20 split with Logo 2 taking the prize. I'll confirm this tonight with the team, but we'll most likely move forward with the more watermarked design.

I would pledge more if I knew for sure logo 2 was the final product, so my wife and I can have multiple cases in different colors

Hopefully we'll find out logo 2 is the winner before the funding ends so I can change my pledge and get more cases.

Logo 2 looks amazing and so much sleeker.

Great industrial design. Consider Apple's use of logos: always distinct, never over the top. Yes, your branding must show, but high-contrast feels a bit too loud. The muted logos--ah, that's the ticket! I'll be happy to engage in conversation with admirers and point to the subtle, etched logo that exudes subdued confidence on this beautiful, functional addition to my iPhone. Screaming white is the antithesis to all that. Thanks, guys, for a beautiful product. Great move to engage your backers, too. Still your decision, of course, but, through the survey, you've extended another touchpoint.

Although comparing the two logos with different color finishes makes it a little more difficult to tell... I also think more understated is the way to go! As tasteful as the logo is, most people aren't looking for the brand "front and center" on their case.

Logo 2 looks great! The more muted coloring is a closer match to the initial renderings that won me over in the first place.

Thanks Jason for letting us choose an option. I've made my decision and hope for the best. This might be a little late but does the model number need to be there? To keep it clean could we just have the I + Case logo and nothing else?

    22. Missing_small

Creator Vince on November 15, 2011

Thanks for the choice. I believe the case looks fantastic and people WILL find out the brand name if they like it. Making the logo stand out more will not help too much. It's not hard to ask someone, "What kinda case is that?" I voted for logo 2 as the company gets its name out and we get a clean profile. I hope others will vote the same. Thanks for the poll Jason.

Thanks so much for giving us all an opportunity to provide such real direct feedback. I was not a member of the vocal group of backers, but i do like the subdued version because I like the subtle aspect of the i+Case itself. Good luck and best wishes - I look forward to receiving and proudly using whichever one wins.
