About this project
Temescal Street Cinema is a free outdoor summer movie series featuring the work of Bay Area film and video artists in the Temescal District of North Oakland. Each week opens with live music and features several creative local food vendors. Since it began in 2008, the goal has been to highlight the work of Bay Area artists, while bringing people together in a dynamic community event that fosters connections in our community.
Begun by two neighbors in 2008, Temescal Street Cinema has since evolved into an event run by a small nexus of artists and neighbors taking on various aspects of its curation and management. The series has run for six Thursdays in June and July for the last four summers and was voted Best Local Film Event by the East Bay Express this year. Our audience size ranges from 150 to 250 people per week.
A typical six-week program includes four nights of narrative-driven feature length documentaries and two nights of short films. Additionally, our “Opening Shorts” series, which is independently curated by the Temescal-based Royal Nonesuch Gallery, presents experimental opening short films and videos of two to three minutes in length each week. As one Bay Area blog writes, “Rather than showing boring major blockbusters, these are strange and interesting films by Bay Area artists and filmmakers that you’re unlikely to see anywhere else.”
The Temescal-Telegraph Business Improvement District has been a great supporter of this event and has invested in projection and sound equipment that we continue to use. However, we are currently looking for funding to support the costs of our 2012 season. Reaching our funding goal will enable us to pay for designing and printing marketing materials, maintaining social media outlets, obtaining City permits, securing a weekly onsite manager and AV technician as well as offering stipends to our artists and musicians. We are fully committed to bringing another year of exceptional film, video, music and community building to North Oakland and hope you will support us!
