A stirring musical review marking the War of 1812 bicentennial compiled from letters, news, and patriotic songs of the time.
New Old Theater marks the bicentennial of the War of 1812 with a folk drama for Maryland! The Perilous Fight is a fast-moving review compiled by Artistic Director Steven Lampredi from patriotic songs, poetry and news from the war years, and scenes from 19th Century plays. Francis Scott Key and other figures from the past spring to life to honor the heroes, both sung and unsung, who endured our young nation’s struggle with Great Britain. The Perilous Fight combines stage effects from early American theater tradition, including live action, tableaux vivants (living pictures) and shadow play. The authentic music, collected by Myron Peterson, is performed by Music Director Janina Dumont O'Brien and the cast; Anne Comer, Linda Gabriel Deutsch, Steven Lampredi, Kathie Mack, Myron Peterson, Lynn Sharp Spears, and Robert Vary. The iconic moment of the war—the bombardment of Fort McHenry that inspired The Star-Spangled Banner—is depicted in a panorama with miniature ship models moving and firing in a diorama-like backdrop during the thrilling finale!

Note from the director: The plan is to offer this production in two forms: One touring company to perform in venues around Maryland, and an extended series of performances at a Baltimore location near the Inner Harbor throughout the War of 1812 bicentennial, and maybe beyond. Funds are needed for replacement costumes, organization, website fees, and especially advertising to bring audiences to the Baltimore performances. If sufficient funds are obtained, we could make another version suitable for performances in Baltimore area schools!
