Update #10: May 2012, The Rev in Los Angeles!

Posted on May 14

Friends,

The film is coming along. Slowly, but surely. But the real reason for this update is to let you all know that the Rev is playing a show here is Los Angeles tomorrow night! We had a great meeting about the film yesterday, and John is in town for a couple more days.

Here is the facebook event page: http://www.facebook.com/events/437465919616141/

He will play at 7pm in Hollywood at The Hotel Cafe, 1623 N. Cahuenga Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90028

I will be there, and I would love to get a solid group of Los Angelinos to come enjoy the evening. For those of us here on the west coast, this is a rare opportunity to see him live. Not to be missed!

Update #9: Dec 14, 2011

Posted on December 14

Backers,

Hope this note finds everyone well as the holidays approach. 'Tis the season for hot drinks and cuddling up. I hope you are all enjoying the album. The link to pass to your friends:

I just returned from a weekend in New York interviewing John and the band, as well as shooting rolls and rolls of city footage using old-school Super8mm film. We had some great discussions about making independent art, the album, the process, and what it means to live and make art in the city that never sleeps. I've posted two albums of photos for your viewing pleasure:

Photos pertaining to this project:

And an album of street and other photos I took while traveling through the city:

Capturing these photos was exciting, but I really can't wait to see what the Super8mm film footage looks like. It will be a perfect emotional fit for the album and film.

Like adding layers to the onion, the interviews and city footage will enrich and inform the footage of the session from back in March. It was a great weekend and I am excited to hunker down in the edit suite over the next few weeks.

In closing, here is a great clip of John playing on the subway. I didn't film it, but it really seems to capture the essence of music in the city. The din in the background is constant, yet people find time to close their eyes and tap their feet to the music. Check it out here: http://vimeo.com/33432459

Peace be with you over the holidays, and I look forward to keeping you all informed of my progress.

Update #7: HAPPY BLACK FRIDAY: A Thank You From the Rev.

Posted on November 25, 2011

[Sidenote: I think if I start a Goth-Rock side project, I will name the band "Happy Black Friday."]

Upon the success of our Kickstarter campaign, Keegan & I launched directly into getting the album finished & the film editing underway.  The album is just about done...we're finalizing the masters in the next few days and then you'll all receive a link to stream the album and/or download it based on your contribution level.  I wish I had the time to send you all an individual thank you note, but life has been a whirlwind recently.  But I did take a little time out yesterday (Thanksgiving) to write this letter of giving thanks to all of you.

Date: Thursday, November 24, 2011 -- Thanksgiving, from somewhere near Valley Forge

Dear Kickstarter Backers,

The campaign is over, the contributions are all in, and "Songs From Church Avenue" (the album & the film) are on their way to becoming a reality.  Without your support the album would've been shelved for another year, and the film probably would have taken another two years (or more) to complete.  So Keegan & I want to thank you from the bottom of our collective heart for supporting our artistic endeavor.

I admit to a tendency toward the dramatic, so please bear with me for a few paragraphs as I put this project--and your support--into the context of a great historical shift in the Artistic Paradigm.

Fifty years ago the equipment necessary to make a professional album or film would fill a whole room and was expensive enough to create a significant gap between what "professionals" and "independent artists" could create. Modern technology has narrowed that gap.  We literally have pocket-size gadgetry and the computing power that afford us the ability to create professional albums and films in our bedrooms.

Thus, our times are highly defined by the rise of the Independent Artist.  For so many people to have the tools to create their vision is a wonderful thing, but with the leveling of the playing field comes an increase in the number of players on the field...and on the sidelines, and in the bleachers, and coming up over the hill in every direction.  The result is a paradox: the independent artist can now afford the tools to express his or her voice, but there is more noise than ever to compete with.  It is easy to get lost in the din.

This means that now, more than ever, craft, originality, and perseverance are required of the Independent Artist.  I could wax on (wax off) about these three elements of creation for another hour, but for now let's skip to the fourth element that is important in the era of the Independent Artist:

The Support of the Independent Art Lover: that's You, folks.

In an age when the air-waves, radio-waves, and web-waves are overcome by a tsunami of content, the vox populi, the voice of the people, is king.  Think about it: with all that stuff out there to choose from, how do you decide what should get your attention & support?  You listen to your friends.  You listen to blogs and social media.  And when you find something you like, you blog about it, you post it on your social media sites, and you tell your friends.  The effect can very quickly and exponentially build to a tidal wave.  (I believe the kids call this "going viral")

Keegan & I are putting our hearts (our originality, craft, and perseverance) into this project.  That is our voice.  We know what our voice is capable of, and we're working to create something beautiful that speaks in a way that wants to be heard (and seen).

By supporting our endeavor you have joined your voice with ours.  Your support amplifies our collective voice, so that even when we whisper in this crowded room, we know we will be heard.

Much love...
Onward, Upward...

Rev. John DeLore (and Keegan Uhl)

Update #6: FUNDED!

Posted on November 14, 2011

Huge thanks to everyone!!

We are so grateful to everyone supporting this project. We are so excited to bring you an awesome album and film. And we are so damn excited to have met our goal.

And we still have 5 days to go! Many corners were cut and favors are being done and long hours are being spent to get this all done for $6,500. So trust me when I say that we can and will use every single penny we can raise past $6,500.

If we raise enough extra we might even be able to afford things like professional color correction for the film (not in the original budget), or (because we love the look) shooting additional Super8 film footage of New York (something we've been toying with, but haven't found the cash for). So let's keep the ball rolling for another 5 days and see what we can do!

Thanks again everyone for being part of this journey!

Keegan
