CLIQUE is the card game of ruthless popularity. Do you have what it takes to tear down your opponents and rule the school?
CLIQUE : The Card Game
Welcome to CLIQUE, the game of ruthless popularity. You play as that most terrifying of creatures, the pretty, popular, teenage girl. The goal is simple, to accumulate enough popularity to take over the Clique and rule the school. You accomplish this by gaining the things all girls need for societal domination, The Car, The Look, The Gear and the ultimate accessory: The Guy. But your opponents, the other girls in the Clique are out to stop you with that most powerful and destructive of weapons: Gossip. Is that Look So Last Season? Is your new Car actually Used? Is your new Guy Secretly Gay? Get all four Acquisitions, free yourself from the vicious Gossip, and you can take over the Clique.
What's the Big Idea?
At a gaming convention, we were joking about all the movie related card games that were coming out. It seemed like everything under the sun was getting licensed. We started wondering what would be the absolute worst movie card game. Someone suggested the Alicia Silverstone movie Clueless. Then, inspiration. While that might be truly terrible, the game I'd love to play would be one based on the dark teen comedy Heathers.
The idea stuck with me, and I started to formulate a game based on all of those classic popular girl, teenage, high school movies like Jawbreaker and Mean Girls. I came up with the concept of a Clique of girls all sabotaging each other while trying to take over their little coven. They'd try to get everything they could in the most decadent fashion, while slandering their friends with vicious lies. It would all be fun and dark while a bit tongue in cheek.
But how could I make it stand out? Many card games have fantastic art, but some end up looking not-so-fantastic. The answer was simple: reality. We would use real people, real objects for the card art. It would give it that flash and sizzle.
The idea sat quietly in the back of my mind for years. Flash forward to last year, I co-founded Talon Strikes Studios with my friend Jason. We have been involved in community theater, writing plays, directing shows and creating props for many local theaters. One night, I pitched him the idea. He loved it and helped me come up with a full set of rules. He suggested we use the young actors we work with. We knew they would get a kick out of being in a card game.
From there we found a professional photographer who has shot for Maxim and Sports Illustrated to do our photoshoot, a renowned makeup expert to help get our models ready and a brand new graphic designer ready to make her mark doing our card design.
The amazing thing was they are all willing to work for free, because they believe in the project. Which brings us to YOU, faithful reader and (hopefully) future patron. We've come to end of our goodwill and our money. We need a boost to be able to finish the cards and get them printed up. We're asking for $3,000, the majority of which will go to printing and shipping the cards.
As the project goes on, we'll be posting updates with the raw images and card designs, box art and promotional materials. We are very excited about the project and we hope you will be too. We need your help to take that last step and we are willing to give you pretty cool stuff to make it happen.
Mechanics
The deck breaks down like this:
- 6 Avatars - These are the girls, each with a unique look and style.
- 6 Looks - From Goth to Ghetto Fabulous.
- 6 Cars - Will you go for Classic or Import?
- 6 Guys - If Jock is not to your liking, how about Vampire Chic?
- 6 Gears - Do I go for the Jewelry or take the Dog?
-
24 Gossip - Hand Me Down? Late Bloomer? Cruelty in card form.
- 30 Specials - Remove Gossip or dramatically alter the game.
And so we come to gameplay. I'll try to keep this simple. The players set what level of popularity they need to reach in order to win. Each turn you play from your hand to try to get Acquisitions (The Gear, The Guy, etc.) for yourself. Each one gives you 10 points each round toward that goal. But the other players can put Gossip on them. While an Acquisition has a Gossip card on it, it earns you nothing. Of course, turnabout is fair play, so you'll be attacking them with the same vicious rumors. The first to earn enough popularity while having all four Acquisitions in play with no Gossip on them takes over the Clique and rules the school.
Along the way, there are also unique cards to, for instance, prevent Gossip being played on your Car (My Daddy Owns A Dealership). It possible that everyone might lose their Guys in one fell swoop if someone should play Smoking In The Boys Room. The game can change dramatically from turn to turn. But isn't that the way with high school popularity? One day you are the queen, the next you are the outcast. Same goes for CLIQUE.
OMG, are you still talking?
If you've gotten this far, then I guess you are more than mildly curious. We think CLIQUE is a great game and we hope you'll help us to spread the word and get out to all those game players out there. Take a look at the cool stuff we have for our donors and throw us a couple of bucks. If you have any questions about the project or life in general, throw us an email at info@talonstrikesstudios.com or at the links above.
Thank you for taking the time to read all this. As a special bonus factoid for your literary dedication, I divulge this secret: the reason I always put CLIQUE in caps is because many fonts have the lowercase q and g look almost the same. I never wanted anyone to ask "Hey, what's CLIGUE?" Now, aren't you glad you read to the end of the page? I know I am.
