Update #11 · Nov 9, 2012 · comment

After overcoming a number of hurdles the documentary project is back on track and several teaser screenings are in the works. The final cut is scheduled for early 2013, a full two years after this project was first conceived and one year after it received much of its funding thanks to all of you.

The catalogue of our exhibit is now complete and details on ordering copies will follow.

Lastly, we encourage those of you in New York to see the work of several Detrás del Muro artists at the curator's stand in pinta 2012 which is to be held at 7 w34th st. at 5th ave. from November 15 - 18. Among the works on display will be a photograph by Reynier Leyva Novo from his piece "Destacamento mirando al mar" which features the members of our group as subjects.

Exhibit: August 3rd

Update #9 · Jul 28, 2012 · comment

Below is the announcement for our exhibit next week. Do come if you are able. We'll post photos on our facebook page for those who can't make it.

Please join us for an exhibition of collaborative works between Lewis & Clark students and students at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba. In March of this year, 11 Lewis & Clark undergraduate students from eight different majors and all four class years traveled to Havana in order to establish a cultural exchange with Cuban artists and art students. The project was funded by the Center for Career and Community Engagement, the Associated Students of Lewis & Clark, and the Dean of Students’ office. It was advised by associate professor of History, Elliott Young. Works in the exhibit were conceived in March, and developed over the resulting months. As collaborations the works express consensus in spite of differences in culture and perspective.

The exhibition opens Friday, August 3rd at 6:00 PM in the Eric and Ronna Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art. It will remain open through August 10th between the hours of 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM.
The Hoffman Gallery is located on the Lewis and Clark Campus

Work continues on the documentary and towards our exhibition in Portland on August 3rd. An announcement will be posted soon. In the meantime, check out http://novo-designs.com/ a website created by our professor, Elliott Young, and friend, Napoleon Landaeta, to bring the work of Cuban artist Reynier Novo overseas. Novo is one of the 25 artists in Detrás del Muro with whom our grouped worked extensively. His designs are available for sale on t-shirts on the website, and posters will be available soon.

From LAX

Update #7 · May 8, 2012 · comment

This post comes to you from Los Angeles as three of us, Drew, Sam, and Spencer, are making our way back to Cuba where we'll be until June 6th. A draft of the documentary was screened last weekend in Portland. Many thanks to those of you who were able to be there. We're going back to continue working on the documentary while the biennial is actually taking place. We will also continue to work with students at the Instituto Superior de Arte in curating an exhibition of American and Cuban student art that will be on display at Lewis & Clark later this summer. A final cut of the documentary is to be screened at the exhibition as well. Thank you for your continued support and wish us luck!
