the contrast of language, shapes and peoples through graphic design

tea in the woods began in the spring of 2007 as a simple means of holding onto something valuable. Time spent in the Basque Country created an unexpected appreciation and love for shapes, culture and the subtleties of language. Upon returning, a way was sought to maintain that connection. With invaluable direction and help from friends and family, tea in the woods now is.

By broad definition, it is human creativity on a natural canvas. In this instance, the providing medium is clothing. Clothing being a mix of t-shirts, sweatshirts, surf trunks, hats and accessories such as bags and any other related creative items. English and Spanish are the primary languages used while a mix of American, Spanish, and Basque cultures provide the setting. Generally, design is simple, clean and subtle. It is less about frills and more about function, perhaps best suited to the international wanderer/craftsman out looking for waves (or something to that effect). For the most part bright colors are not used, though if colors are used they will primarily be of the pastel or earth tone variety. By and large artwork will be made up of no more than four colors and encouraged to be between one and three.

The supporting medium is a mix of hobby and craft. The more obvious relationships are those with surf, skate, art and music. These are related but not what define tea in the woods. The less obvious but perhaps more defining includes language, ceramics, writing and that general traveler/wanderer lifestyle. These themes are the primary focus and drive the line and books, posters, stickers and events put on by tea in the woods.

It is also important that tea in the woods be run in an environmentally friendly manner. From organic cottons to water based inks, where and when green options are possible, all efforts are made to include them.

There is really only one purpose for our fundraising... and that is to make various upgrades to our transportation fleet of one volkswagen vanagon, affectionately called 'Hank'. Hank currently bears the burden of product transportation both to and from printing and accounts and is the sole transport vehicle for sales and marketing. We would like to add a go-pro camera with mount, some decal work and internal upgrades so that Hank can become an automotive icon for tea in the woods and help tell our stories while taking us even further as a brand. We have budget for the line but we do not have budget for this.... hence our participation.

Help this overlooked and under appreciated aspect of business stay creative and genuine!

Thanks for reading.... hope to have you involved!
