Walt Whitman time travels. Will New York (and Gay Politics) Recover?
Amorous Wet: Walt Whitman in Love
As part of Dixon Place’s HOT Festival this coming July we are presenting a showcase of a work-in-progress entitled: “Amorous Wet: Walt Whitman in Love”, in which Whitman (John Farrell) and his Irish friend, Peter Doyle, (Antóin Ó Gormáin) find their worlds crashing into the New York of the present and vice versa. Combining black-out sketches, comedy, recitations, romance, puppetry (designed by Michelle and Deborah Beshaw) and videos. The overall result proves equally funny and touching as one New Yorker, so ahead of his time, is brought up to date!
The production is raising funds now, and we are in deficit for a modest $650. Please consider giving any amount to help get us to the stage!
Now in its 21st year, the Hot! Festival has been described by the Village Voice as New York's Best Gay Theater Festival. Famous for its edgy anti-establishment programming this seems like a perfect venue to bring Hipster Hero, Walt Whitman back to life!
Yes! Unless you have secured tickets via this campaign, the only remaining seats will be for press etc. Only standing room will be available on the night!
Antóin Ó Gormáin is a 17 year old student of music and drama from Co. Cork, Ireland. A very talented young chap, this is his New York debut. We are confident you'll be seeing more of him in the years to come! We've posted a photo of him in the update section! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1786377305/amorous-wet-walt-whitman-in-love/posts/262799/
John Farrell has been exploring many aspects of Whitman's work,k personality and life ince launching the first outing of "Walt Whitman: Time Traveller back in December, 2011. (That production premiered in Ireland) In their intervening months he has been a street performer, the mascot of a puppet troupe throughout New York, and participated in marathon readings at locations like Barbes in Park Slope and The Granite in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
Here's a sample of what People have to say:
“Farrell succeeds brilliantly…deserves to be seen worldwide.”
