Update #1: The DPRK

Posted on August 21, 2011

Greetings,

I have secured the reservations to Beijing and North Korea.  August 31st to Beijing on Korean Air (12 hrs) arriving Wednesday afternoon.  Next day off to our Embassy to visit with employee Chris Smith who collected soil from Lesotho years ago and now is stationed at this Embassy.  Saturday is the flight to Pyongyang with their national airline, Koroyo, where I will be greeted by a guide and taken to the Yanggakdo International Hotel (check google).  Sunday will be for the soil collections at some culturally significant sites and the Arirang Mass Games Performance.  Monday could include some more soil gathering and then the drop off at DHL. Tuesday is back to Beijing and wait 9 hours for the return LAX flight.  Dirty work but someone has to do it--

Thanks again-Gary

Gary Simpson, born 1947 is a life long resident of Orange County, California. He received his degree from California State University at Long Beach in 1971. He soon thereafter began exhibiting in Laguna Beach and the surrounding western states. Simpson has worked with cement as a medium of artistic expression since 1986. Years of dedicated effort in developing unique cement mixtures have culminated in his lively, colorful abstract fresco artworks. These large scale works are complex explorations of color, texture, and shape that emerge from his on-going experiment with material and technique. About his work, Simpson says "I take my medium and my inspiration from the Earth". Cement has been used for centuries as a building material, but in using it as an artistic medium, I free it from its functionality. His work is currently shown at The Joseph Wise Gallery in Laguna Beach, CA www.JosephWiseGallery.com
