Seeking to revitalize neighborhhods through gardens and art. Convert a large vacant lot to a resident inclusive green space.
Project Scion will turn vacant lots in Rochester, NY into resident inclusive green spaces – thereby transforming the people and the neighborhood.
Project Scion 2012: The Orchard will be built in a large vacant lot at the corner of Jay & Child Streets in the JOSANA Neighborhood of Rochester, NY. This green space will pay homage to the history of the area as nursery land and seeks to improve the lives of the people who live in the area through gardens and art. Not only will they now have a “town square” for neighborhood gatherings, but also a place to bring their kids to play and a place to sit amongst the trees and flowers.
Founded by a collaboration of local landscape designers, the team is not new to the idea of building resident inclusive green spaces and their collective portfolio is vast, including projects that have garnered both regional and national landscape and environmental leadership awards. The creators of Project Scion are: Pietro Furgiuele of Waterford Tilling www.WaterfordTilling.com , and Sharon Coates and Bruce Zaretsky of Zaretsky and Associates www.ZaretskyAssociates.com .
In recent years the team has been inspired to take what they know about the healing powers of gardens to our community’s most vulnerable inner-city areas. These neighborhoods have been plagued by vacant lots, violence and have been hit hardest by the recession.
The Orchard will be a permanent park through a partnership between the Charles Settlement House and the City of Rochester.
The founders of Project Scion have donated all of their design and meeting time and are donating the time of their staff to help build the park, but are not doing this alone. The residents will be helping to create this space, both individually and through Charles Settlement’s Project Coach and Foodlink’s Greenworx program. Work begins on June 28th.
Project Scion already has support from: The City of Rochester, Charles Settlement House, Dolomite Stone, Monroe Roadways, Batavia Turf, Miller Brick, Gilson Gardens, Fitzgerald-Harris Designs, Lollypop Farm, Nazareth College Greenhouse, Northern Nurseries, The Butterfly Beltway Project, Kinloch Nelson and others, but we need your help.
What will the $5000 cover? The Kickstarter funds will go towards some of the material expenses such as: trees & plants, a new fence, re-bar for an entry sculpture, Trex, hardware and paint for the completion of the benches, as well as fuel, trucking costs, equipment rental, administrative expenses and food, drink and t-shirts for the troops.
The impact of your help will be huge – you can be a part of the revitalization of a neighborhood. Not only will the park itself have a positive impact on the area, it will also be used for art and citizenship programs to enrich the lives of the residents.
Help us to bring this project to reality.
