Dear everyone,
I am ready to record my 3rd album here in NY and I would love for you to be a part of it! The songs are ready, the album is planned, but I still need some help with the necessary funds to make it a reality. Your donation will mean so much to me. It's awesome that with Kickstarter so many people can be a part of this little project (well, big project for me!). We will be in it together!
The album is inspired in part by Eric Dolphy's Out To Lunch, Dave Brubeck's song Blue Shadows in the Street, NY's Canal Street (after dark), of love lost and love lasting, - and most importantly it's inspired by the amazing musicians that will be a part of it.
The money I raise will directly go to paying the musicians, the studio time, recording, mixing and mastering and then finally pressing the album. I don't have a recording company or any sort of backing to help with this, my albums so far have been self-funded. As much as I would like some record company support, I am also happy to do things this way. Once, a record company told me that they might consider me if I sang jazz standards, so people could tell if I was 'good' or not. But, I believe in the music I write, and I am a big supporter of all original music. Without original music and lyrics, jazz vocals will never have the opportunity to become as expansive and exploratory as I believe it can be. Doing things independently means a nurturing of new music and new ideas. My first album was released in 2003, my second in 2009. I am proud of these albums and excited that the songs are still coming. The encouragement and positive responses I've received along the way have been absolutely vital.
If we go over the pledged amount then YAY - even better!! - I can firstly use it for some much needed promotion for the new album. Anything extra will really help give it the push necessary to get it out there in the world. AND perhaps I can also press some albums in vinyl. This has been a dream of mine for a long time, as I am quite in love with records (especially jazz... my favourite and most coveted are my Poesy (Masabumi Kikuchi) album and the Eric Dolphy album I cited up top!). So, if you visit this page and see that I have been lucky enough to achieve my goal, please know that any additional funds will go specifically toward promotion, and maybe a vinyl edition of the album.
Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing deal. If we don't reach the goal, I don't get any of the money, - so don't delay!! Donate now! Nerissa Campbell was born in Australia and grew up in towns along the coast of Western Australia and on the island of Bali. Her family settled in the capital city of Perth where Nerissa attended the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts, earning a degree in Jazz.
In 2001, following a trip to California where she was invited to perform at the Stanford Jazz Festival, Nerissa moved to New York City. She began writing Paint Me Orange while living in Brooklyn. The album was recorded and released in the fall of 2003. Hailed as “innovative”, “risk-taking”, and “incredible” by RadioioJazz and JazzNow, Paint Me Orange went on to sell out of its original pressing. Nerissa’s second album, Musings of a Telescopic Tree was described by Time Out London as full of “smoky-voiced songs of good bourbon and bad love affairs.” Marcin Kubicki of Audio Magazyn in Poland characterized the album as “Moving. A personal,interesting and intimate album.”
Since living in New York, Nerissa has performed in venues ranging from underground clubs to concert halls and has been invited to music festivals in Australia, the US, Singapore, the Netherlands, and South America. In addition to performing her own material, Nerissa has collaborated with the post-metal band A Storm of Light, the Balinese gamelan group Dharma Swara, and has been a part of performative literary readings, modern dance pieces, off-Broadway plays, and a 32-piece orchestra.
