Update #14: THANK YOU!!
We know that you know.
But we want to tell you from us, Adopt-A-Farmbox initiative that we successfully reached our KICKSTARTER fund raising goal of $10,000. We are now ready to begin the Adopt-A-Farmbox program in 6 local NYC schools! It was a long road for us, but we made it and we want to personally thank you for the extraordinary help we received along the way.
We know you have a lot to juggle on a daily basis, but you made a conscious decision to lend a hand in making this campaign successful. We appreciate your effort and we want you to know that it gave us the confidence and inspiration we needed during our most difficult moments. We truly appreciate the community effort it took to make this happen. We sincerely thank you.
Best,
Adopt-A-Farmbox team
Update #13: Filmmaker Scott Hamilton Kennedy of The Garden Supports Adopt-A-Farmbox
It has been an exciting and humbling journey so far for the Adopt-A-Farmbox team. We've had parents, teachers, and people from various communities reach out to us in support of gardening and nutrition education in schools. We are especially excited to have the support of Scott Hamilton Kennedy the filmmaker behind the Academy Awards nominated documentary The Garden. The film features a community food garden in L.A. and the fight to keep it open. The film is inspirational! It will renew your belief in the ability of people to come together for a common good.
We are both humbled and excited to have the support of this brilliant filmmaker. He has taken the time to post about us on the face book page for The Garden
http://www.facebook.com/thegardenmovie. Please take the time to check out his post on Adopt-A-Farmbox. You can learn more about the movie at www.thegardenmovie.com. This is a must see film for anyone interested in food, gardening, community gardens, and community activism. Everyone at Adopt-A-Farmbox has watched the film and some of us have been moved to tears.
Thank you all once again for supporting Adopt-A-Farmbox!!!!
Update #12: We ONLY have 3 more days! Can you help?
Hello friends!
AS you may have noticed, we ONLY have 3 DAYS left to raise $4418 on Kickstarter. Please note your pledged $$$ will not come us unless we reach our fund raising goal of $10,000.
We need the $10,000 to cover the cost of materials required to build the farmboxes and provide the required educational resources for the 6 New York City we have partnered with.
As obesity and diabetes rates continue to soar, we believe that teaching children how to eat better and how to nurture their minds and bodies is essential for them to lead successful and healthy lives.
You probably don't have children in these schools, live in New York City, or have any children of your own yet. But if we want this society to function better, we need to support those who lack access to healthy food options. You can do so by supporting programs like Adopt-A-Farmbox which facilitates access to fresh foods and nutrition/health education.
We are therefore asking you today, to tell your friends and family about Adopt-A-Farmbox and encourage them to pledge their support for our program. The children will learn to grow, harvest and cook vegetables; learn about water conservation and composting; and increase their awareness of how connected they are to their environment. We believe that this program will plant a seed in children that will create a passion for making the world a better place for them to live in.
Thank you for your continued support. Please forward our kickstarter link to your family and friends.
Update #11: NYC schools care!!
From http://thecompoundbrooklyn.wordpress.com
Forget everything else you’ve heard – New York City schools do care about the overall quality of life of their students and Adopt-A-Farmbox can testify to that.
Aki from Adopt-A-Farmbox told us their side of the story. “We started our organization on a simple premise – to empower New York City residents through food by facilitating opportunities for urban farming. Consequently, people will learn to grow food, take charge of their health, their community, and the environment at large. Our goal was to start with schools and community institutions but, we expected it to be a hard sell for schools. We believed that most schools would be hesitant to take on a program like ours especially since most New York City schools are already taking on more than they can chew (pardon the pun.)
We were so WRONG! We have met many dedicated educators who understand that good nutrition and environmental stewardship are an integral part of a successful academic life and overall quality of life for every student. They have reached out to us and are eager to bring the farmbox program into their schools this September. Principals, teachers and parents are our real heros. Their passion, dedication, and leadership inspires us to keep working toward our goals.”
So if you think schools don’t care, think again!! Check out their partnering schools who are dedicated to improving the quality of life of their students one farmbox at a time…(Also check out our kickstarter page for more info on how you can support urban farming in schools http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1771434405/adopt-a-farmbox)
