About this project
The American Diversity Project is an annual documentary project that collaborates with innovative storytellers to build a record of American society. We pose a theme to be interpreted by a select group of visionaries. Their interpretations and creative work provide a view of contemporary issues in American society. The project culminates in a gathering of the participants in a region related to the given theme.
For 2010 we posed the theme 'Oil and Water' to 16 contributors from across the United States. From Dec. 4 to 12, the contributors will gather in Chalmette, LA. In Louisiana, participants come together to go over the work that they produced throughout the year and collaborate on a project focusing on the Gulf Coast. The work from the entirety of the project will be shared and discussed with the community at the end of this week long workshop.
The work will be collected online at www.americandiversityproject.org and also in a magazine showcasing the photographs, stories, paintings, maps and interviews from the 2010 'Oil and Water' project. Frequent updates of the work and news on the project can be seen online at www.americandiversityproject.org/news.
Funding will be used for production costs involved with the project. This funding will go to website maintenance and hosting costs, printing expenses for a magazine of the project and for basic accommodations for contributors coming to Louisiana.
The participants for 2010 range in practice from photography to cartography and have been published and exhibited nationally and internationally in some of the nation's largest newspapers and magazines including The New York Times and National Geographic. They have received some of the highest honors in their fields and have worked abroad through the Fulbright program.
Through creative storytelling, the American Diversity Project produces a document of American society. It is our goal to gather a lasting record of the historically significant issues that shape America and encourage discussion about the changes in our communities.
