A wall of mosaics in celebration of motorcycles and dedicated to those bikers who are no longer with us.
I have been creating public mosaic murals in Springfield, Massachusetts for a number of years and recently got permission to use a large wall opposite Stearns Square. In the summer this is the center for “Bike Night” that has live music, and hundreds of bikers come from all over to meet and enjoy the night. Springfield is also where the original Indian Motorcycle factory was located.
I rode motorcycles for many years and decided to put up motorcycle mosaics on this wall. Then I kept hearing about accidents near here where bikers were killed and I thought about creating some sort of memorial for them. I discovered that there were only two memorials for bikers in the country, both in the mid-west, so I decided to make this into a “wall of celebration and remembrance”. A celebration of the beauty and wonder that bikes give so many of us and a remembrance of those biker friends and family who are no longer with us.
The wall will have three motorcycle mosaics: two Harleys and one Indian.
Above these, created in mosaic, will be the words:
“DEDICATED TO THOSE BIKERS WHO ARE NOW RIDING THE ROAD TO FOREVER
YOU WILL BE IN OUR HEARTS AND MINDS ALWAYS”
On the left side of the wall, done in mirror mosaic, will be the names of those to be remembered given to me by their friends and families.
There are two mosaics completed. I need to create one more motorcycle mosaic, put up the dedication, and put a border around the wall. As the names are given to me I will create the name mosaics and install them on the wall.
The money raised will be used to purchase materials, for cleaning and some rehab for the wall, for outreach and publicity, and for studio and installation time as the mosaic work is very labor intensive.
I am working on a website for the wall and all funders and sponsors will be listed on the website - http://rmarkey.blue-fox.com/wall.html
