About this project

***Funds raised above the $4000 goal will go towards creative renovation! Please keep pledging!***

Letterpress is a relief printing process and traditional craft that began in the 15th Century. I have been setting type by hand and letterpress printing my zine Ker-bloom! every other month since the summer of 1996, making it the longest-running zine of its kind. Ker-bloom! is a personal zine, where I write about all kinds of things going on in my life: bike trips, friends, adventures, etc.

A couple of years ago, I made the move from my long-time home in the San Francisco Bay Area to the rust belt city of Pittsburgh with the hopes of making an abandoned house into a dream shop.

Pittsburgh is not a city in ruin. It's a city filled with great people doing interesting things, with corridors of urban forests and herds of deer. During my time here, I have participated in and organized many community events. It's not a city of nothing; it's a city with something, a whole lot of somethings actually.

As a result of decades of economic and population decline, there are many abandoned houses in Pittsburgh. If these buildings are left vacant for too long, weather and decay renders them uninhabitable. There are houses owned by the city for as low as $4000, and I want to turn one of them into a dream letterpress shop. Because of my extensive work doing similar renovations on my friends' homes, I have the skills to fix up an old house and make it amazing.

The basement I’m printing in scarcely has room for all of my equipment and is much too small for more than one person to comfortably work. When I build my dream shop, I'll be able to fully expand and offer teaching classes in letterpress printing to the community.

Although I have the resources (and resourcefulness) to make the repairs that an older house will require, this funding will kickstart the project by allowing me to purchase the building. I'll literally be able to get my foot in the door.
