The latest in a series of films by Mae Catt takes us on a journey further back in time to meet Sam - a serial killer.
Hello and welcome to our Kickstarter! Thank you so much for stopping by. This is our most exciting project yet - and our most expensive. That's why we need YOUR help!
"Sam's Story" is the fourth in a series of unique films written and directed by Mae Catt. This installment follows Sam on his journey of self discovery from the battlefields of Vietnam back home to another kind of battlefield - normal life. Since his horrifying experiences as a combat surgeon and losing friends and lovers to the ravages of war, he has been struggling to come to terms with who he really is and what he's become. In addition to the stigma of his homosexuality, he has been trying to hide the new-found urge to kill everyone around him - even his best friend Audrey. Audrey tries to get Sam the help he needs as he rapidly reaches his breaking point.
The last three films that we made are great, and have done very well on the festival circuit, but they've all been pretty small scale. With "Sam's Story" we're taking this serial killer train to the next level. First, this is a true period piece, set in 1974. It's also set in the South. There will be multiple locations, a night shoot and some complicated and expensive action scenes and a party scene that will require casting professional extras and stunt people. And even though we're shooting "L.A. for the South" that gets expensive!
The short films in this series are all set in the same unique universe. Mae created this universe for her feature film script: "EVERGREEN". "EVERGREEN" is currently in developement with two producers attached. In order for Mae to be considered to direct this very personal project (She's been writing it for 4 years) she needs to prove that she can handle directing a large-scale production. We're hoping that "Sam's Story" will prove that without a doubt.
Mae's Previous Films
Here's what people are saying about Mae:
“For many years I was a mentor in a Los Angeles high school screenwriting competition. I read many scripts, and met with many aspiring writers — and Mae was by far the most memorable. I was introduced to her via one of her early scripts, a piece called RENFIELD — and I was astounded that such a well-crafted and nuanced work could have been produced by a teenager. Many years of the competition have passed since then, and I still haven’t seen a script that met the caliber of Mae’s. Over the past two years we’ve had the opportunity to work together professionally, as I hired her to adapt an IDW comic (called The Veil) I’m producing. She is an extraordinarily gifted young woman and her talent will not take long to be appreciated by the world at large.” - Stephen Susco – Producer: “THE POSESSION” Screenwriter “The Grudge”
"As a professional screenwriter for 30+ years, and a teacher for 25 of those years, Mae is one of the best talents to come through my class and a solid bet to succeed in this very unstable and transitioning business. I feel secure in saying that your contribution will be well invested in this project." - Ron Osborn, Writer/Producer of The West Wing and Screenwriter of "Meet Joe Black":
"I love Mae Catt for precisely the same reasons I love Tarantino. So smart. So idiosyncratic. So good with actors, the casting thereof. So clear on precisely where the camera belongs, when. So on top of every visual/emotional beat. So in love with the medium. So great with dialogue. And sooooo much authentically dangerous, fiercely energetic fun. It kicked my ass, and was my fave. I could go on all day. I wanna see her first feature. And the one after that. I think you get my drift." - John Skipp, New York Times bestselling novelist and filmmaker.
"We love Mae and believe in her 100%!" - Mae's Parents

How Kickstarter works:
Kickstarter is a time-sensitive "all or nothing" fundraising program. If you donate to Kickstarter projects, and the project meets or exceeds it's fundraising goal within the time limit, your credit or debit card will be charged at that time. If the project is not fully funded within the time limit, your card will NOT be charged, and the project will not be funded. Why would we choose to go with Kickstarter then, instead of "keep what you get" sites like Indiegogo? Well, we don't want to have to compromise our vision for the film any more than is absolutely necessary. We don't want to try and make a $17,000 film for $10,000. That is almost always a recipe for disaster and disappointment. You might be thinking: "$17,000? I thought you were raising $20,000?" Well, after Kickstarter takes 5% and Amazon takes 3-4%, we're going to have about $17,000 left to make the movie with. Can the project raise more than we're asking for? Of course! What a great problem that would be to have. If we raise extra money, then we can pay everyone more, have better food, more props, or maybe add an extra FX shot.
Also, We'd like to thank the following awesome people who helped make the Introduction Video possible:
