A look at what happens in the pits on any given night at a "small-time" local short track.
I've often thought about making a documentary film that takes a "behind the scenes" look of everything that happens in a single night of racing from the perspective of a driver and his pit crew. Even though these drivers and their pit crews are not professionals, there is a lot of hard work that goes on that race fans don't see. These are common people who hold regular jobs and race cars during the weekend for fun and entertainment purposes but take it as serious as a NASCAR driver/team would.
I've been the unofficial track videographer for my home track, Redwood Acres Raceway in Eureka, California so I already have access and permission to video record the races as you can see above. The biggest issue I have is that I do not have the proper equipment to produce a high-quality video (camera, microphone, etc.) The current equipment that I do have does not record video well in night conditions which is essential for this project.
I have been an auto racing fan for my entire life. Most people are aware of NASCAR but the real heart and soul of motor sports in America are the various short tracks all across the country. This is where drivers with aspirations of going to NASCAR get their start. It's where average people with average jobs compete in front of their friends and family and turn into local heroes. Unfortunately, short tracks across the country are closing more and more year after year. I want to show the work and effort it takes to race while also showing the importance that local racing has in the surrounding community.
The initial goal is to purchase the equipment necessary to make a documentary film based on the local races at Redwood Acres. Once that project is completed, I will continue doing as I have the past several years recording the races, posting them to YouTube and selling DVD copies.
This is not a scam or some sort of way for me to make some money for myself. The initial documentary project is a bit self-serving but the end result will be a positive and a benefit to everyone who enjoys the races and in particular enjoys the videos I post on YouTube. Some of you have known me longer than others and know the work I've done in the past. Those who don't know me well should know that I've attended races at RAR for virtually my entire life. For the better part of the last 10 years, I wrote online race reports for RAR that were posted at Lissa Uselton's http://RacinTheAcres.com site and other racing news sites such as the now defunct http://RacingWest.com. The past several years, I've recorded and posted video of the races at RAR. I have volunteered countless hours in both areas and the only money I've made is a small amount from race DVDs I've sold. I have not and don't work for the track, nor have I been compensated for my work and please don't take that as a knock against Rich and Linda who have been 100% supportive of all my work, allowing me into the track for free and recording the events.
I am not asking for a handout. I am asking for help so as I can continue contributing to my home track and those who love racing and racing at it as much as I do. The video camera I have used throughout the process is not made for recording high speed cars in low light. Should this come though, I would be able to purchase a better camera which would improve video quality immensely. I would also be able to purchase smaller cameras either for in car shots or "speed shots" from the wall or catch fence. In the end, I would be able to produce better quality videos all around, from the visual side to the production.
I am 100% aware of the current economical situation for most everyone at this time. I know $3,000 is a lot of money to try to raise but I hope everyone understands how much I believe in this and how much I want to continue doing what I've been doing. Every little bit helps and save for the percentage KickStarter would receive for helping with this, all of the money would go to cameras and DVD authoring equipment.
If you regularly view and enjoy the videos I've posted, please help me by supporting my project. As I said, every little bit helps. One dollar is one dollar closer to getting to the goal. Please share this with others who may not be aware and don't hesitate to ask me questions.
