Looking forward to the book! I always enjoy your tweets.
For sure - and thanks for the response. Its not really feedback and the practice of copy/remix/use in a wide variety of ways is clearly common practice in the world of hyperlinks, but since I'm working on a project that explores this area and hopes to help facilitate a process over time...I'm interested in personal pov's. Take care and look forward to the book.
Matt, it's a great point. I'd love to say that if the page I found it on included a 'license this' look that I would have immediately purchased it, but honestly, I probably wouldn't have used the photo then. I came across it, orphaned from its originator and whatever licensing they wanted to attach to it. The web is powered by the hyperlink, but the hyperlink isn't always preserved. Just because it looks professional doesn't mean that the creator uploaded it with the intent for me to license it ... I don't know what they want.
But I do realize that pretty soon I've got to start paying much more attention to licensing as for the first time in my image dilly-dallying I'm actually going to be selling something. I appreciate the feedback, sincerely, and I'll keep it in mind.
Ok thanks. Yea, I'm curious as it looks like a somewhat professional photo, and...while sites like Kickstarter are a new commercial grey area...its being used in a somewhat commercial endeavor-effectively as a promotional ad for promotional use (commercial use, so to speak) to drive interest..and thus funding "revenue" towards your book project.
But you are not compensating the photographer and in fact in this case not crediting them either. I think it is interesting in the context of your thought process around this, was it considered, would you be willing to pay for the image if it was easier to do so...and I find it especially ironic in the ecosystem of community support for creative projects like Kickstarter.
I might notice it, but what is the perception of that by the community, the overall landscape of image rights and usage/remixing/compensation for imagery etc. I'm not a photographer, just looking at this market more in-depth. Don't want to get into it that much more here but if you wanna shoot me an email mrmattspangler [at] gmail or dm @mattspangler would be interested to discuss a little more.
Matt,
I didn't buy that photo. I found it through a Google image search. Normally I like to cite my photos, but I couldn't find anything that seemed like the original source. I'd love to hear more about your research.
Quick question. Somewhat off topic but I'm curious if you purchased the image you're currently using on the updates page (image of a woman under distress w/ "don't live...text") for use on the site or if it was open to use by CC...or perhaps not either way.
I'm doing some research (and actually working on an application) that relates specifically to the buying, selling and motivation of digital image usage and the rights therein and the updated landscape of perception that exists when it comes to paying for content of this type. As a case I'd be interested to hear your process and thoughts. Thanks
It had better be good :)
Great idea Bud. Congrats on the new gig as well. Excited to help see where this goes.
This is amazing serendipity, Bud!
Our company is called the Bucket Brigade. We've built a business model that relates to what your book is about. Our company teaches organizations to have a healthy culture of collaboration around their brands internally, so they're ready to do it externally through social media--rather than the bolt-on social media approach advocated by many, through tools and processes. We believe our process results in a more authentic transformation to a digital culture in organizations. (http://bucketb.com)
Can we talk about your book plans at some point soon?

Bud: That was fast. Look forward to the book. You a modern day man.
Congrats on being funded.
Thanks so much to everyone for their backing and supporting so far. Here are some more awesome comments on the projects from other backers - http://whatconsumesme.com/2010/posts-ive-written/why-you-should-back-the-bucket-brigade/
I'm busy compiling interview subjects and overall thoughts for the content of the book, I'm starting a loose list of interviewees here - https://docs.google.com/Doc...
And I've been giving a lot of thought to the value for Editorial Board Members and how to deliver it. For one, I'm hoping to offer early transcripts of my interviews exclusively to EB Members. (You can become an EB Member by donating $100 or more)
I'm freakin' stoked on this. Backed!
Hell, yes. Backed.
I think that books like "Baked In" and articles like the "Awesomeness Manifesto" were only the starting points of a much more fundamental conceptual shift in approaching business, marketing, branding, advertising and talking to consumers in a way that is relevant and adds incremental value.
I think we have all been looking for news business models and fresh thinking - the kind spearheaded by Radio Head's record publishing tactics and those of people like Jill Sobule, Josh Freese, Trent Reznor.

Reassessing how we create new markets and dialogues is something I have been playing around with and find hard to articulate - I know there is no better person than Bud to write about all these issues..take them to pieces...and reassemble the puzzle in an interesting and thought provoking way. Can't wait to see what this gives! Thanks a mil for making us a part of it as well.
Great example of the potential impact of nurturing likeminded crowds to create new markets.. Can't wait to see the final product which I think will mark an important new milestone in contemporary marketing best practice. Excited to be able to take part.
An interesting process with an interesting result close to the things I am working on thinking about.
Hope it gets funded - the value of participation is so much higher than passive reading experience.
Aside from being a worthwhile subject to delve into, I'm looking forward to seeing just how the whole project pans out. Probably so I can liberally borrow for something that's been an idea of mine for a while but has never crystalized before this. Hope it's awesome.
Great concept - most of the value of getting on board at this stage is being involved in the process. I learned a lot watching how the bicycle portraits kickstarter project launched, chopped, changed, scrambled, hustled and evolved.
As a suggestion, I think a video of you talking about this project would be fantastic - I love seeing authors talk about their books on Amazon.
