Update #55 · Sep 23, 2012 · 69 comments

Alright! That’s three new Forge Father sculpts and a prone marker locked in - great work!

Alternate sculpts add more variety to your Forge Father team whilst the prone marker is a fun and characterful piece that helps denote a knocked over model:

To continue the Forge Father theme, we’re now hunting down this hulking MVP – Yurik “Painmaster” Yurikson:

$400,000 – Yurik “Painmaster” Yurikson, Forge Father Guard MVP

Yurik Yurikson is notoriously difficult to interview. He doesn't like to talk about how he got into DreadBall, or how he found himself slumming it as a Free Agent for almost a decade before rejoining the Midgard Delvers, or how he once took down three opposing guards with a single Slam. In fact, all Yurik wants to talk about is how much he hates “Brickbat” Vognar, long-serving guard with the Manglers...

This would be another amazing milestone number achieved and we’ll be able to fund Yurik “Painmaster” Yurikson – a Forge Father Guard MVP. Often described as the “Iron Ancestor of the DreadBall pitch,” Yurik suits up in full DreadBall armour in anticipation of a chance encounter with “Brickbat” Vognar.

If we hit this goal, we’ll be able to sculpt Yurik and include him in Jack and Striker!, rounding out our 8 Season 2 MVPs!

As we enter this final week - let's get him in!

What do you think?

Heath has produced this great piece of concept art for the Denton Dazzlers Cheerleaders as a possible future stretch goal!

Much like the action on the pitch, DreadBall Cheerleading is a physical sport in its own right and, if Catalina Luvan’s right hook on Goblin Stunner Kruela Dancov is anything to go by, it can be just as bloody. For the most part, DreadBall Cheerleading Troupes belong to individual Stadiums rather than specific teams (though some wealthy Corporation owners employ their own as well) and gone are the days of the Pom-Pom – Cheerleaders instead wear energized Flexire skirts and carry sophisticated ‘shields’ that shimmer with trails of bright colours, team logos, point-scoring explosions and half time advertising. They also make great protection when the crowd starts getting rowdy and begin throwing things…

Jake already has the in-game mechanic for the cheerleaders nailed on and these models will be used in game, so let us know what you think!

PS: There are now only 145 pre-Christmas shipping guaranteed Striker! packages left so if your mates or club members are thinking about getting in on the game, now is the time to get them to do it!

@mantic - if it is possible to do the buy 2 get 2 free offer on all keepers, I would *really* appreciate it - as someone with the Jack deal, I know I'm going to get some stuff sooner, other stuff later, and I have no need for the z'zor and female corp keepers until Q2 when their respective teams arrive anyway.
      Please? :)

@mantic - thanks for clarifying that - I only joined this campaign around the 200k mark, so must have missed out on the alt human / orc scuplts (and prob other things too!).
I can see what you mean about Season 1 and 2 keepers being manufactured separately... it's a bit frustrating, but I understand your reasoning.

@David Laughing Ferret - I imagined the mechanical knee joints and boots were more to get the extra jumping height!!

I still think prone minis are a bit un-needed and would much rather something else.
I understand that putting minis on their sides can lead to chips, but being plastic it's pretty unlikely. Also, it's nothing simple counter next to the mini can't denote.

I would say prone players wouldn't stay prone for long. And likely wouldn't be more than 1 or 2 prone at any one time. My understanding would be if the player was knocked down in a slam on the opponents turn it wouldn't be till your turn that you'd use an action to roll to get up. Many people wouldn't want to lay a figure down, the paint could be damaged or it may loose where it was placed since they are bigger sideways than the hex. Personally I don't see that I would need more than one prone marker per team.

    7. Ella.small

Creator Yoki Erdtman on September 23, 2012

I'm not interested in cheerleaders, and even less so in prone players. Seriously, when would such a figure be used? My players will be individually numbered and feature customized paint jobs, should I then replace them with generic prone figures, and try my best to remember who this prone figure represents?

Earlier in this thread I said I would never paint a male cheerleader, but that doesn't mean I'm against them being sculpted; they're just very low on my list of priorities. Same could probably be said for female cheerleaders probably as it'll probably take me a decade just to paint the teams themselves! I was actually a cheerleader for two years within my high school marching band: we were the "obnoxious" cheerleaders as opposed to the "normal" cheerleaders, but it was a blast. If you sculpted something like that... I might have to paint it after all!

    13. Fb_profile_picture.small

Oh and please make the cheerleaders work for the league and not team specific. To make a set per team might be the final piece of fluff that breaks the camel's back. Show us an alien cheerleader and set a price for the bundle then laugh as the money rolls in.

    14. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator Robert Wheeler on September 23, 2012

I like the looks of the cheerleaders, and I don't care if a few are male. In competitive cheer at least a third are male. All collegiate teams use both sexes. The guys do the lifting, throwing, and catching. Only small town non-competitive cheer or the pros use all females for sex appeal.

On a separate note, I would love to see the next two teams, and I don't care if they would ship even later then the season 2 stuff. As one person said, go ahead and nickel and dime me for these little things just show me the next two teams. :)

    15. Nightmares-bishop-of-battle.small

      Creator Doctor X on September 23, 2012

I like the idea of prone markers too. Dunno if they need to be extra sculpts because it might add too much expense. Knockout tokens might be cool. I like the look of the concept model though.

    16. Nightmares-bishop-of-battle.small

      Creator Doctor X on September 23, 2012

I like the cheerleader just the way she is.

She DOES have a touch of the ol' Fallout about her as Tasker said, but if I understand the game fluff correctly, this is a game that has its roots in starship cargo holds where guys were tossing around used arty shells. And, the Smackers are described as former space pirates. So, yes, we have the sleek and shiny corporation team, but there must be some rust and soot in this world.

    17. Fb_profile_picture.small

Creator crveatch on September 23, 2012

The NBA has male chearleaders and so does the Baltimore Ravens. I don't see why DreadBall should not. Whoever said a pyramid of all girls is easier never thought how much strength it takes to be on the bottom of one of those. I like the sculpts, but where is the Spirit Kick pose? It's one of the most common cheerleading moves and could be quite a violent move as well.

That said let's stop teasing and make these an available extra already to up the pledge total. Also give a prone pack to add on. I'm pretty much begging you to nickle-and-dime me until the end of this kickstarter so we can get more stuff in there.

    18. Max.small

Creator Jazz -White Rabbit of the Obsidian Order on September 23, 2012

My major problem is that it's bikini armour: if they actually do need to wear armour then having large holes like that is going to make it worthless and if they don't need the armour then as others have said why are they wearing them? I'd expect something more sleek and sci-fi, like a cybersuit or something.

    19. Gilbert%20150.small

Creator Tasker on September 23, 2012

Have to agree. Love the drawing of the Cheerleader but hate the fact that she's wearing armour.

Just because it's the future doesn't mean she has to look like she's out of one of the Fallout games.

    20. Lfs%20wm.small

Creator David Laughing Ferret on September 23, 2012

Love the cheerleader concept with the holofields, I imagine they could change color, spell words, etc. very cool: brilliant in fact.

But one big problem I have with the drawing is the armor. She's not playing the game or being shot at in combat, so why the multi-layered metal knee & boot armor? It looks clunky & like it'd be harder to move, which would get in the way of her job. Honestly it makes her look more like a 'post-apocalyptic' cheerleader than sleek sci-fi cheerleader, so I think it's pulling away from the concept and feel of the game... if she was cheering at Thunderdome, then ok, but this setting feels less feral than that. She could have fabric padded protection for some of the more crazy stunts, but the segmented combat armopr (even in the limited few locations) doesn't work in my opinion.

    24. Avatar.small

Creator Casidhe on September 23, 2012

Why no boys? They make it more interesting than just T&A women, and don't make us female backers feel left out. They don't need holo-skirts, and TBH I'd prefer them not topless, but that's just me.

Ideally I'd prefer the other prone markers to any sort of cheerleader, but if we are going to have them, I'd like a figure I can appreciate too...

    25. Tiger%20cub%20avatar.small

Creator Talarius on September 23, 2012

I agree with many of the people who've already postd here: I'd much rather see additional Veermyn sculpts as a stretch goal before cheerleaders, although the concept sketch does look good. I will never paint a male cheerleader model, so that would be wasted on me, btw.
The Pom-Pom and skirt idea looks quite difficult to pull off. I know that Infinity has Hacker models that use clear plastic with sci-fi computer interfaces printed on, but iirc, these are flat pieces of plastic. Yours would be curved and even domed!? That strikes me as a challenging manufacturing problem, so I will wish you the best of luck in advance. :-)

Need all the poses, obviously ;)

If they are to be part of this KS I suggest them as mere add-ons, like the acrylic pitches, without stretches maybe, (even if it makes them more pricy), as I can see a lot of people not looking forward to them.
Afraid they would slow down things !

Females are more athletically flexible and would be much lighter for cheeramids.
      >>>>>>>

I take it you haven't seen many male dancers then? I confess to only having seen male cheerleaders on the internet (which also informs me for 3 decades women weren't allowed to participate), but male dancers I have seen perform. The latter are of course oddly popular with women...

With so few days left, I'd really like to see us get alternate poses and prone markers (and possibly cheerleaders) for all of the season 1 teams. I think we have a healthy set of MVPs already. We should make season 1 as complete as possible before the deadline!

    35. Images.small

Cheerleaders belonging to stadium instead of teams is a nice thought : it prevents from multiple expensive and hard to reach stretches/add-ons.

@Andy - Glad you like the cheerleaders! As for your other point, alternate humans and orcs were already done way back when we hit the $60K goal :-). We'll look into whether we can mix and match on the Keepers - while we can do it for the Season 1 and Season 2 Keepers separately now, it depends on how they're manufactured as to whether we can mix the two sets. To make up for it, we've made them buy two get two free, so if you don't want the Forge Father and Veer-myn ones at least you haven't paid for them! :-)

    38. Joshua.small

Creator Andy Marshall on September 23, 2012

I cant believe I'm saying this, but the cheerleaders look awesome.
I'd still rather see alternate sculpts for the initial 4 teams before we get prones and cheerleaders, but... they do look very cool - its the holo shields that make it for me - i hope they get pulled off well in models using clear plastic sheets...

but srsly, get alternate human corp and orc sculpts nailed first before we move on to cheerleaders - prones would be bottom of the list by far - as someone else said it can get confusing knowing which they'd replaced and we'd need a lot of them and its nothing a simple token cant fix mechanic-wise - they really are low priority.

and please can we get a mix and match on the keepers so i can get a human corp, female corp, orc and z'zor keeper in the $15 set - i dont want the dwarf and veer'myn ones and it's putting me off getting any keepers at all.
