Keep Ball

Update #51 · Sep 20, 2012 · 48 comments

WOW – amazing stuff guys, we’ve broken our previous Kings of War Kickstarter total with 9 days to go! That means that Coach Renton is now included in Jack and Striker!

We’re going to keep working on finishing Seasons 1 and 2 over the next couple of stretches (Cheerleaders, prone figures, one or two new MVPs and alternate sculpts have all been suggested), starting with these…

$370,000 –Female Corporation and Z’zor Season 2 Keepers

Becoming a Keeper takes years of physical and mental conditioning. Corporations tend to invest in two to three personal coaches to train a single Keeper and often draft in promising new recruits from the army because of their experience with intense training and heavy exertion.

Z’zor Keepers are surgically altered Guards who have demonstrated particular resilience on the field of play. They have a scoop-like claw grafted in place of one of their pincers and hardened armour plates are layered over the previous exo-skeleton to make these beasts even more imposing.

Keepers are upgrades to Guards earned through experience over a league and you can have as many Keepers as you can have Guards. If we pass this goal we will be able to fund two different Season 2 Keeper sculpts – one for the female Corporation and one for the Z’zor – and put them together as a Buy One Get One Free bundle for just $8!

Note that as they are a team of Strikers the Judwan do not have a Keeper. The Robots we’re less sure on but we think they could be a team of Jacks.

Thanks guys!

As to the helmet - I think that it would share a lot of properties with corporation teams like the 29ers, and it really looks like a Corporation helmet.

"Alternate sculpts 100% over Cheerleaders or prone figs. Having multiple poses for every position would be fantastic and really help sell the game. Ideally, you should be scraping the bottom of the barrel team-wise before you have to put a duplicate pose on the pitch."

"Alternate sculpt me up to the max, please!"

"+1 for alternate sculpts over prone figures "

come on - I reckon we still have lots more stretch goals to go before this campaigns up - we NEED alternate sculpts for teh basic minis.

By tokens I mean small ones a la Warmachine for "knocked down" placed next/on the figure base, not large ones replacing figures completely.

FWIW I havent the slightest interest in cheerleaders. I will have my hands full trying to get the teams themselves painted, without having to paint sideline staff too. A coach is as far as I will be going regarding that.

I dont even know why anyone would want prone figures for a game like Dreadball. It sounds like an irritating way to disrupt gameplay and needlessly increase play time to me.

Alt sculpts for the various positions all the way please, starting with the Forgefathers an Veer-myn and moving on through the Season 2 teams and beyond.

Let me also support the idea of 'more flexibility in ordering keepers'. If I pledge Jack and add Fem Corp or Zzor (or both) it makes more sense getting keepers for these teams than for Delvers and Stealers which I wouldn't be able to use.

Cheerleaders ,,, errr no thank you !!! Prone figs !!!! No real point it's not going to save time in game !!! Would rather have a template to put under mini to show his injured state !!! Like a oil of blood !!

It would be cool to see helmet C from the female team used as the keeper helmet. As for the other goals I'm not to keen on Cheerleaders or Prone figures. It would be nice to see more Alien MVPs or variant sculpts for the teams. Multipul poses for the Judwan is a must to make the team exciting to see on the gameboard.

I second the call for more flexibility in ordering keepers - the 'free' keepers in the BOGOF aren't much use if I'm not interested in getting those teams/races. (But I love the keeper concept!)

      Posting on behalf of Hellebore:
Just because guards are upgrades doesn't mean a hypothetical master striker would be identical. You might only get a max of 3-6 in your team. Keepers get more than a punt abvility, they get 3+ armour on 4 dice, making them really hard. The master striker suggestion only gives the stirker the abilitty to choose where the ball bounces, it does nothing for his armour, speed or anything else. Mechanically it simply allows the judwan to do something else in the game without ending their turn in the process. The season 2 teams do not have rules written for them as yet, so there is no dangerous precedent to set. season 2 would simply list MS as an upgrade skill that only X players could have. Not that I really think it's particularly powerful, unless yiou have your players shadowing every opponent in order to ensure they get the biounce off, it doesn't do anything different to a normal throw against an opposing player..

Creator Mystic Weasel on September 21, 2012

Master striker sounds like an awesome idea, but i would rather it is left for a 2nd Judwan MVP. 3 reasons - 1. Keeper is an upgrade to guard, everyone who uses guards can get it, Judwan don't because they have no guards. MS would be an upgrade to striker, most other teams have strikers so a seperate advancement table would be needed for the Judwan, a dangerous precedent with at least 4 teams to go. 2. Guards make up less than half and often even less of the team, all 14 judwan players will have access to this skill. 3. The keepers punt ability automatically loses the ball and ends your turn, MS offers better value for that kind of upgrade if used wisely, combined with point 2 i would worry about game balance. I would rather see a 2nd Judwan helmeted MVP, who plays in the Judwan style, but with his own (more violent) twist on it.
Agree with most about the Female keepers helmet, not really to my liking, it doesn't really resemble a heavier version on the standard female type.

I add to the previous comments on the helmet. I like it heavy armoured. It's just the mouth area that remind me of some masochistic toy (you know the ball you put in the mouth) ; ).

As we now have Ronnie coach, I would had that I remember reading some comments about having league experience rules for coaches. I don't know if it's doable (depend of the coach rule of course) but it's an awesome idea.

Yeah, more goalies. Superb news! Really enjoying how the Zz'or are fleshing out, nice mix of different bugs. The helmet on the female player does has its charge, but I'd lean more towards a Helger-type of helmet.

Seconded, or rather fourthed for the master striker.
Perhaps even a very simple "I've had enough of being pushed around, I can't take it any more, the next being to push me gets pushed back" type upgrade..? It would simply make the Judwan Striker a Jack instead, or perhaps giving him the ability to slam at -1...!?

Very simple yet effective for giving them access to something they can't do. The same as Guards and handling (lopping) the ball.

I'd still like a way to swap out some of the 1-2 figures from the different races that have been opened up in exchange for keepers for the 4 starter teams I'm getting in my Striker order. If that's possible, I'd love that.

      Hellebore replies:
“Master striker sounds good but then I suspect people would complain about why the other teams don't have it”

Perhaps, but no more than Judwan players would complain that they can’t get keepers. It would just be an upgrade that only the judwan can get. Seems fair enough considering they lose access to what is effectively 3 positions if you include guard. Only they have the hand eye coordination to deflect balls like that, in the same way that only everyone else can be a guard and develop into keepers.

@Jennifer woah i think we got a great idea here

@sining well it kinds of makes each team unique in their ways where one is high on offensive capability while others are more proficient in other areas.

Totally support this idea. Hope mantic picks this up from the chatter! (am sure they will noticed it :D )

Jennifer seams to have the right idea for the direction of Judwans. If they specialize in being Strikers they should have specialized Strikers. And I can see a reason for Robots having their own special stylized position. Get'em ready because the next goal is less than 24 hours away.

    35. Db-ff-avatar.small

Creator Jennifer Creagh on September 20, 2012

      From Hellebore:
What about a unique Judwan Striker upgrade, rather than a Keeper? To give them something interesting? Say a ‘Master Striker’. Master Strikers get to choose where the ball scatters after they’ve thrown it at an opponent. For every success the ball bounces off one hex towards the nearest Judwan player, who can catch it as normal.

So basically they use opposing players to change the direction of the ball. A really brutal passing game. There's always the risk that they'll drop the ball, but they can take opposing players out in the process. As Judwan can throw the ball at the opponent already and they are focused on being strikers, I think allowing special upgrades in the same vein as the keeper that makes them better at it would be a cool option.

I reckon that would be quite a spectacle for the fans, watching a team entirely made up of strikers headshotting their opponents while making inhumanly accurate passes... they’re still pacifists though, the opponent got in the way of the ball when they were passing it…
