About this project
cappellaromana.org
Cappella Romana is a professional vocal chamber ensemble founded and directed by Alexander Lingas, and is dedicated to combining passion with scholarship in its exploration of the musical traditions of East and West—Byzantium, Russia, and Western Europe— with emphasis on early and contemporary music.

This project will make possible a recording by Cappella Romana in the 6th-century Church of 100 Doors on the Island of Paros (above).
Cappella Romana will be there as a part of an already scheduled tour, and we have already raised the majority of the funds necessary for the tour itself. Your support will give this tour greater impact--with a permanent recording!
We’re asking for your help in this Kickstarter campaign in order to:
* Record the program "The Byzantine Tradition" within the 6th-century Church of our Lady of 100 Doors, Ekatontapiliani. Our Grammy-award winning producer Steve Barnett and recording engineer Bill Levey will form the recording team.
* Complete and print the CD “The Byzantine Tradition,” recorded Live in Greece in an actual Byzantine church.
As we celebrate Cappella Romana’s 20th Anniversary Season, I invite you to secure your copy of this musical treasure, Cappella Romana “The Byzantine Tradition,” by supporting our Kickstarter campaign and helping us complete the funding for this project.
Thanks for your support of Cappella Romana!
Σας ευχαριστούμε για την υποστήριξή σας της Cappella Romana!

The 11th Annual Festival of Sacred Music of Patmos, Greece (Φεστιβάλ Θρησκευτικής Μουσικής Πάτμου)
Opening festival concert and residency, Sept. 1-3, 2011
This will be Cappella Romana’s first appearance at the Festival of Sacred Music of Patmos, Greece. Cappella Romana’s unique, central focus on music emanating from both the Eastern (Byzantine) and Western Roman Empires is a perfect match for this festival.
The Church of our Lady of a Hundred Doors, Paros (Ναό Παναγίας της Εκατονταπυλιανής Πάρου).
Concert, recording and residency, Sept. 4-6, 2011
Cappella Romana has an invitation to the Island of Paros (Parikia is the main town) from the Metropolitan Bishop of Paronaxia to perform a concert of sacred Orthodox chant and choral works on the island, and to make a recording in the famous Church of 100 Doors, the Ekatontapiliani. The church’s founding dates from 326 AD, possibly by Saint Helen, mother of Constantine the Great. The existing church was likely built during the reign of Justinian in the 6th century. It is a renowned heritage monument, and an important pilgrimage site for the Mother of God, second only in fame to the Megalochare church on Tinos.

Cappella Romana is a professional vocal chamber ensemble dedicated to combining passion with scholarship in its exploration of the musical traditions of East and West—Byzantium, Russia, and Western Europe— with emphasis on early and contemporary music.
CAPPELLA ROMANA
Its performances “like jeweled light flooding the space” (Los Angeles Times), Cappella Romana was founded in 1991 by Dr. Alexander Lingas, and celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2011-12. Cappella Romana’s name refers to the medieval Greek concept of the Roman oikoumene (inhabited world), which embraced Rome and Western Europe as well as the Byzantine Empire of Constantinople (“New Rome”) and its Slavic commonwealth.
Flexible in size and membership according to the demands of the repertory, Cappella Romana is the only ensemble in the world with a special commitment to mastering both the Byzantine and Slavic repertories in their original languages, thereby making accessible to the general public two great musical traditions that are little known in the West.
In the field of contemporary music (for which this grant is intended), Cappella Romana has taken a leading role in bringing to audiences the works of such European composers as Michael Adamis, Ivan Moody, Arvo Pärt, and John Tavener, as well as promoting the work of North Americans such as Christos Hatzis, Robert Kyr, Peter Michaelides, and Tikey Zes.
Cappella Romana tours regularly and made its European début at the 2004 Byzantine Festival in London with concerts at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sophia (this tour was supported by a travel grant from The Fund for U.S. Artists). The same year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York presented the ensemble and released its CD Music of Byzantium for the exhibit Byzantium: Faith and Power 1261–1557 (the ensemble will return to the Metropolitan Museum in 2012). The J. Paul Getty Center has presented Cappella Romana twice, commissioning a newly researched program of Sinaïte chants for the exhibit Holy Image, Hallowed Ground: Icons from Sinai. Other appearances include concerts for such institutions as Stanford, Princeton, Yale, and the Pontificio Istituto Orientale (Rome), in addition to music festivals in Canada, Ireland, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the USA.
Cappella Romana has released thirteen compact discs with four more in preparation.
