Deflated is a short film that takes a fantastical look at a boy's gender crisis in the aisles of a discount super-store.
Hi. I'm Dustin Shroff, the writer and director of Deflated.
THE STORY OF DEFLATED:
The story of Deflated came to me while I was writing a feature script called Broken Arrow, which takes place in 1995 Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who must hide his crush on Kurt Cobain (and later a crush on his male babysitter) from his mother, an Evangelical Christian struggling with depression.
I did a lot of reflecting on my childhood while writing Broken Arrow. It didn't take long for me to remember how awful it felt growing up as a closeted gay kid in a such a repressed and conservative place like Oklahoma. I learned very early on that pink is not for boys, because that would mean you were gay, and GAY=SATAN.
Deflated is my way of saying f*ck you to all of this nonsense. :)
Deflated follows Chris, who has come to the super-store with his dad to spend his allowance- his heart set on getting a giant bouncy ball. But when he gets to the toy aisle, he soon discovers that all of the balls in the ball cage are bright pink...except for one deflated green ball.
What follows is a fantastical trip down the aisles of the super-store, where the pink balls come to life and Chris is swept up in a world where it's okay for boys to play with pink.
But ultimately Chris must make a choice: take home one of the bright pink balls or the deflated green ball?
YOUR INVESTMENT IN DEFLATED:
The money we have raised for the film so far has allowed us to secure the shooting location, begin work on building the fabulous props (remote controlled pink balls, a pink ball chair, pink balls on sticks, just to name a few) and to begin our search for our actors. We are almost ready to go.
We are reaching out here on Kickstarter to raise the remaining funds we need to move into production and beyond. It's going to take some money to make sure the pink balls actually look like they are bouncing by themselves and flying Chris through the aisles of the super-store. We also need the money to cover boring costs like the insurance to protect 'Chris' as we hoist him in the air on set. The money we raise on Kickstarter will cover the rest of what we need for the two day shoot, and it will also cover our post-production costs. And then Deflated will be ready to send out to film festivals!
Speaking of film festivals, we are honored to have the sponsorship of the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival (aGLIFF). Their sponsorship not only gives us a platform to promote the film, it also insures that your donation here on Kickstarter is tax-deductible.
aGLIFF has also kindly donated badges and passes to their 2011 Film Festival for us to give away as backer rewards here on our Kickstarter site. You can find out more about aGLIFF and all the amazing things they are doing for the Texas LGBTQI community at www.agliff.org .
If you have any questions about the film or about donating here on Kickstarter, please feel free to send me a message here on the site.
Thank you for your time. I can't wait to share Deflated with you!
