“Bird” is a 2D/ 3D animated short about a girl who was born with the ability to fly. She eventually grows into an artist, but as she grows up, she is continually mocked and ostracized by her peers. Over the course of 18 years, she hovers lower and lower to the ground until she loses her flying abilities altogether and finds herself artistically stunted.This all changes when she falls in love with a human-sized bird who teaches her how to fly again. She finds herself regaining new artistic inspiration among the clouds with him. However, when Bird abandons the nest while she’s sleeping, the girl grieves and relapses into an earthbound lifestyle. Through her healing process, the girl takes steps to fulfill her artistic potential. Through her newfound sense of self, she teaches herself how to fly again.

 “Bird” will feature a combination of 2D and 3D animation. The 2D characters will be animated (frame-by-frame) by Zee Chang, Gena Scott, and Rebecca Waterman in Adobe Flash at 24 fps. The 3D backgrounds will be rendered by German Garces in MAYA. The running time will be roughly 5 minutes.“Bird” is a product of UCSB’s Film Studies 106 production course.
