About this project
Why we need your help?
The BCA and Company One have partnered on a new program to develop and produce plays by women playwrights. We are seeking $1200 to fly the playwright from California to Boston so she can be present for rehearsals and the production.
What is XX Play Lab?
XX PlayLab is a new program developed by the Boston Center for the Arts that fulfills an urgent need in the theatre community by supporting women playwrights in the development and production of new scripts.

Who & What’s involved?
The BCA is teaming up with Company One, a Resident Theatre Company at the BCA, to provide a dramaturgical advisor and to workshop one new play over the course of a season, from initial reading to full production. Readings will happen in the Fall and Winter to obtain audience feedback that will help the script move to full production in the Spring.

What’s the play about?
In the spirit of the American Horror genre, Lauren Yee’s Hookman is full of humor and plenty of gore! This unsentimental exploration of how America copes with tragedy in the Facebook age begins with Jess and her high school best friend Lexi on a typical Saturday night at the movies. That is, until Hookman (of crazed-man-with-a-hook urban-legend fame) kills Jess. This unexpected twist leaves Lexi, well… sad. She must go back to school, where nobody wants to hear her whine about her dead friend, just as Hookman begins to stalk Lexi.
Who’s the playwright?
Lauren Yee is a playwright born and raised in San Francisco, now in her third and final year at UCSD’s MFA playwriting program. She received her bachelor’s degree from Yale University. Lauren has been a Dramatists Guild fellow, a MacDowell Colony fellow, and a member of the Public Theater Emerging Writers Group. She has been a finalist for the Djerassi Resident Artist Program, the Heideman Award, the Jerome Fellowship, the PEN USA Literary Award for Drama, the PONY Fellowship, and the Wasserstein Prize.
