ABOUT THIS PROJECT 

THE GOAL This is the story of Salsa. A documentary that examines the music, the dance, and the raw passion of what has become a growing global phenomenon. It’s the story about both extraordinary and ordinary people, and the indelible impact Salsa has made upon their lives. A story about people overcoming virtually insurmountable obstacles of poverty, under-privilege, prejudice, and still having the undying passion to turn their hopes into dreams. 

Our goal is to premiere “Heart of Salsa” at the 15th annual Los Angeles Salsa Congress, Latin Music and Dance Festival, May 23-26, 2013.

 BACKGROUND

Deeply inspired by the exhilarating world of Salsa, We, film makers JANJA GLOGOVAC and MAGALI GUIDASCI explore the inspiring ways in which salsa dance and music creates a cohesive bond in families and communities, and more specifically, takes a look at Salsa’s unique tendency to influence and energize cross cultural unity between people of all ages, races, and social classes around the world.

 For many devotees, Salsa speaks to the heart and drives the soul, and our goal has been to capture this magic on film. This spiritual odyssey that inspires people against all odds to turn their dreams into reality, to turn their adversities into successes, inspiring people to move, dance and live life to the fullest! Capturing intensely personal moments on film, we reveal how Salsa transforms lives. It’s not just rhythms and movements, IT IS A WAY OF LIFE!

The documentary features exclusive interviews of WORLD RENOWNED DANCERS such as; Eddie Torres, Griselle Ponce, Edwin Rivera, Cristian Oviedo, Manuel dos Santos, Eider BNF, Chiquito, Ricardo and Tianne, Junior & Emily, Alien Ramirez, Grizzly Hidriago, Imagen Latina, Mulato y su swing Latino, Jefferson y Adriana, Imagen Latina, Ryoko, Wabisabi, African Jet and many more. 

Featuring interviews of every day enthusiasts and testimonials from ground-breaking WORLD FAMOUS SALSA MUSICIANS including; El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico, Alfredo de La Fe Victor Manuelle, Oscar D’Leon, Luis Enrique, Adalberto Santiago, Johnny Polanco, The Echo Park Project, Mercado Negro, and many more. 

The film is narrated by and also features Albert Torres who was named Grand Marshall of the New York Puerto Rican Day Parade in June 2011 for his contribution to spreading Latin music and dance around the world. Before finding success as a world renowned Salsa dancer and becoming a pioneer in founding Salsa Congresses around the world, Albert is a prime example of someone who was spiritually transformed by Salsa. Grappling with life-threatening drug abuse and addiction for many years in his life, Albert Torres gives firsthand account of how he overcame these adversities and that it was his passion for Salsa that motivated him to get help, lift himself up from rock bottom, stay clean and achieve success in the Salsa world. 

PROGRESS OF THE FILM 

We have almost completed shooting, having already shot on location in New York, Los Angeles, Cancun, and Hawaii; however, they still need to shoot in three locations integral to telling their story: Puerto Rico, Colombia and Cuba. The documentary will include one of a kind archival footage from Albert’s personal library, as well as visually stunning footage shot in locations all over the world ranging from the Mayan pyramids in Mexico, the concrete jungles of New York City, tragedy ravaged Japan, and to the lush forests of Hawaii, just to name a few. 


WHAT HAPPENS IF WE DON’T REACH OUR GOAL

 Every Kickstarter project must be fully funded before its time expires, which means if Janja and Magali don’t reach their goal, they won’t be able to share these inspiring stories, and spread the uplifting message of Salsa around the world. We invite you to be a part of our story by contributing with your donation of $10 or $25 to help bring this vision to life!

 WHAT THE FUNDS WILL BE USED FOR 


The funds collected from Kickstarter will be used to complete filming, and pay for such costs as travel expenses to Colombia, Puerto Rico and Cuba, minimal pay compensation for 4 person crew and equipment rental (approx. $18,000.) 
Partial post production costs for offline and sound editing (approx. $13,500.) 
And 10% of the total pledge amount goes to fees for Kickstarter and Amazon as well as shipping costs sending you the DVD's, T-shirts and CD's (approx. $3500.)
