A series of short films and photographs that document Indian women's adornment traditions and how they are changing today.
Time and Place: Indian Women's Ornamentation and Globalization
Bel Son Productions is collaborating with Christine Beaderstadt, a Seattle based journalist and photographer, to create a multimedia documentation of Indian women's adornment.
We are looking at ornamentation traditions and how they are changing today.
The
films and photographs, with interviews and research, explores concepts
of globalization and how this comes across in ornamentation and
dress traditions. Because women are often leaders in dress customs,
this film will focus on women’s stories from various regions in India.
The tradition versus modernization concept, though not new, is
quickened in our digital age. The influx of Information Technology in
India shows that the country is at a crossroads old and modern worlds.
It is our intention to capture adornment through visual means and audio interviews. The photographs, film, and audio will range from the everyday to century-old ceremonial dress. It is our mission to capture an ongoing and inevitable loss that reflects the changing times of India.
The Result
A multimedia gallery display that includes video footage, photographs, and audio interviews with an interactive online component.
There is more room in our media for positive stories about women around the world. We aim to fill this gap and to help reveal the value of Indian women's stories about their traditions and communities. This project will help launch an important dialogue about the impact of globalization on women and cultural traditions.

Christine Beaderstadt is an artist and independent scholar based in Seattle, WA. She works in several different formats; writing, interviewing, and photographing are the methods she uses to tell stories.
Christine has worked in music journalism in the Midwest for several years, interviewing and photographing musicians in a variety of venues- from small pubs to Lollapalooza Chicago, London’s now defunct Astoria, and Summerfest, America’s largest music festival. In her interviews and writing, she seeks to gain insight into what makes music- and musicians- successful in contemporary culture. She is currently the music columnist for The Capitol Hill Times.
