How's it coming along..?
The Arcade culture was huge for many years here in Montreal as well... We still have 1 or 2 left but they will probably be closing their doors in the near future. Thanks for making this doc and I'm super happy to have made a contribution to this project :) Long live video gaming!!
This is really important work in terms of documenting American culture, so I'm proud to support it. I can't wait to share it with friends.
Almost $10k over goal!!! Congrats! Can't wait to see the film.
Just wanted to say, I was happy to find this project when you started off this kickstarter, and really happy to support it. I'm straight up excited to see you guys closing this out with almost $10,000 over you goal. It's a great project, and I can't wait to see the film!
Hey Kurt!
I grew up on similar urban arcades in Los Angeles, so I'm psyched for this project. I'm reminded briefly of the documentary Boxing Gym -- a few friends saw it, and thought about how it showcased an excellent educational environment in disguise, by being a place to really get into an activity. Your description of the arcade reminded me of that.
Thanks for your work!

Just pledged. This seems like a great project with alot of heart.
Also I'm glad I could help another video game based project, I just finished shooting a TV pilot about employees working at a video game store.
Definitely pledging. I use to go to the place a lot. Good to see so many of my old time friends in the video too. CTF was pretty big for me a few years ago. I lived in Jersey though and often only went to Fun n Games but tried to make it out to CTF as often as I could. FnG was mad ghetto but damn I had some good memories in that building. Good luck with your project. Only thing that bothered me about the place was that nasty sweat smell (that I oddly miss). Looking forward to watching it.
We as the creators of The Devil's Minstrels applaud this project whole heartedly and wish there was a way to go back to 1985 when we were "Mall Rats" hanging out between the Orange Julius machines and the arcades playing all the classics.
We saw that this was already well over 100% funded but still had to help out - we're looking forward to our T-Shirt & DVD :)
As an FYI we used to play Karate Champ

'til our wrists were numb.
Good luck folks!

So excited to be involved, small though it may be. This project really resonates with me...
Good Luck, Kurt.. I really feel this will be a huge success..
I'm not very good at video gaming in general, but I've always been fascinated by arcade culture (though it seems to be mostly extinct), thanks for providing me with an opportunity to contribute (even if only in a small way) to such an awesome project.
Yo, I'm really glad you guys are making this movie. I absolutely love video games, and wish I had more opportunities to go to arcades. I've only lived near two in my lifetime, and even though both were pretty modest, I still have great memories of them. I'm only 17, so I kinda missed out on the prime years of real arcades, but I'm still really upset to see that they're getting pushed aside by online multiplayer and "arcades" with more stacker machines than actual games. Anyways, thanks for starting this project. It looks like a lot of work and heart is going towards this documentary, and I know for sure it'll all be worth it.
So glad I was able to visit Chinatown Fair before it closed... I had a lot of fun playing classic games along with ones I never heard of (Melty Blood) and watching the intense DDR and Street Fighter action. Very happy to be able to contribute to this.
Hello Kurt. This is a wonderful project. My first taste of video games was in an arcade, on space invaders, 1980... no wait, Pong, 1978! (may be off by a year or two, memory fails me). Anyway, I'm glad you are documenting this. It means a lot to me.
Josh and David, welcome aboard!!! We are so happy to have you guys as executive producers! I have a great feeling about this movie. It is going to be special.

Love arcades and arcade games! So happy to be part of this project as I remember going there a couple of times when I was taking a film course at NYU. Can't wait for this!
Spent many a post-Dim Sum meal playing DDR at Chinatown fair with my girlfriend (now wife). Good luck!
Hope you reach that goal I passed this info along to every one I know. GOD! I miss my arcade here in PA. :(
Passing on the love brotha!
Donated and posted on my facebook to spread the word. Best of luck reaching your goal. I'm really looking forward to seeing this.
Great idea for a true NYC institution! I came to Chinatown Fair all through high school (bigup LaGuardia) and even wrote an article about the new wave of midtown arcades VS. C.town Fair when I was in college. Long live the Tic Tac Toe chicken!
Kurt,
Your trailer made me tear up. CTF was my life during my high school years, it was who I was. As a life long arcade lover and amateur filmmaker i can't wait to see this project finished! It is my absolute privileged to be able to support you in this endeavor.
Best of luck!
As requested... repost on the public forum :D
Hey Kurt,
I have been spreading the word.
I was born and raised in France, therefore I have never been to CF, but it was always "heard" of as one of the mecca of arcades (along with one on Piccadily Circus in London and some more in Madrid).
I spent my youth in arcade, made friends, and learned to love games. I miss those afternoon spent there, the ambiance, the mythos, the thrill... Oh boy, I am becoming nostalgic.
So you may ask, why helping you out?
I have two main reasons...
First one is: My love for arcades has defined me... I am now working in the videogame industry. I could talk about Nintendo, I could talk about Sega... I played those but the real love and passion came to me with people around me playing.
Second one: I have two kids, they are 4 and 6. You have to make this documentary as we have to have a trace of what this culture was. I want to show your movie to my kids and tell them "yeap, that's also how I was raised... I was there... that's me in there".
Good luck guys, I'll (and am already) spreading the word :D
Scott!!!
Dude, thanks so much. I am so glad you think so.
Your support of this is making me dance. (dancing The Raspberries' "Tonight" in honor of your support from Cleveland!)
-Kurt
Kurt, once again you have tapped into a special subject...this one's gonna be a great one!!
John,
That's a great story! Thanks for sharing and for your support. I love the image of you two battling each other and earning one another's respect. And then you get the ultimate nod with an invite to CF. Classic!
-Kurt
I was playing Soul Caliber 2 at a near empty arcade in Times Square around 2003. For once there was someone on the machine who knew what he was doing. We traded rounds for an hour, before he turned to me and asked, "Do you play at Chinatown?" He drew me a map on the back of a page of his move list. I went there for years. While I'm sad to hear it's closing down, I'm happy to hear you're trying to honor the place. Happy to support you on this one.
Thanks to everybody contributing very much!
Thanks Matti-Pettka!!! I am so glad to hear that you made it to the arcade before it closed. And it is super cool to be getting support all the way from Finland!! We are global now!
I made a pilgrimage here on my trip to NYC last september. It was amazing and now i'm really glad i got to see it alive. Greetings from Finland.
