It is difficult to get the news from poems, yet men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there. -- William Carlos Williams

Contemporary Poetry Matters. Don't Let it Stay Hidden.

This is what we at Drunken Boat believe: Contemporary poetry and poetics are not relevant to the larger national discussions of culture, politics, or economics. Contemporary poetics are crucial to those discussions. Without the slanted commentary and insight and discoveries that poetry offers, the national bickering on every subject from gun control to birth control remains shallow and soulless. We forget beauty. We forget complexity. We forget the hidden implications of language.

This is why we are thrilled to be publishing The Hide-and-Seek Muse: Annotations on Contemporary Poetry, a collection of poems written by exciting contemporary poets paired with Lisa Russ Spaar's essays exploring their relevance in our shared world. But publishing this book isn't enough. We love this book so much and think that its so important that we want to get it into everyone's hands and on everyone's nightstands. We want it in every library.  We want it stolen from libraries. We want people who never read poetry to read this book and welcome poetry back into the common life of our national dialogue.  And we need your help to do it.

What Your Donation Funds

This book is happening. It will be released in Spring 2013. But as many of you know, a book's journey is begun - not completed - when it is published. The printed and bound object isn't the end goal. We want this book to be read! And not just by poets and scholars and students. We want CEOs and grocers and gardeners  middle managers to find themselves (or to lose themselves) in The Hide-and-Seek Muse. But that sort of promotion and marketing requires a financial investment that Drunken Boat - like all small presses - can't make on its own. Your contribution will fund a book trailer, promotional events and readings, review copies, promotional materials like postcards and bookmarks, press packets, and the work that will get it all done.

If you can't donate (or even if you can) help us spread the word. Share our campaign with friends. Send them searching for The Hide-and-Seek Muse.

Thank You

Thank you for checking out our Kickstarter page. We truly appreciate it. No one accomplishes anything great or small alone.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Our biggest challenge is one that you will most likely find familiar: including poetry in mainstream intellectual and cultural dialogue. We want to bridge the gap between the seemingly isolated world of poetry and contemporary conversation ranging from politics to pop culture, but we all know that's a difficult task. Often, poetry is dismissed wholesale as being irrelevant. Many people admit that they don't read poetry, that they don't understand it, or that they don't like it. But we believe that The Hide-and-Seek Muse is the perfect book to change that. We might not succeed in getting it on the New York Times bestseller list, but we promise to try.
