More about our project:
After more than a year of creative preparation, San Francisco based dance company, DOUBLE VISION will travel to New York City for the east coast premiere of Hysteresis, July 9-10, 2010. The premiere will take place at the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio in the West Village and will feature the collaborative efforts of five dancers and four designers.
Since our inception in 2003, we have distinguished ourselves both nationally and internationally. In 2008, we celebrated DV's fifth year by embarking upon an ambitious U.S. tour, the 4×60 Tour, a seventeen city tour that took us from Los Angeles to Brooklyn. Following the success of the 4×60 Tour, we travelled to Europe where we resided at the Museumsquartier, January – February, 2009 and performed throughout Austria, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Switzerland. Locally, we have been honored to present work at venues including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, CounterPULSE and ODC Theater. We have also garnered the support of grants including the Metlife Creative Connections Meet the Composer award and grants from the Zellerbach Family Foundation and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
With all of these fantastic experiences and honors under our belts, we still have not achieved the one thing we have sought for years: a major performance in New York City.
For artists, New York sets the bar and offers the most critically savvy audience one could hope to find. The opportunity to perform at the Merce Cunningham Studio will help us achieve greater recognition in the contemporary dance world and validation for the experimental work we've been dedicated to creating. This particular venue also holds extremely personal significance to all of us. Merce Cunningham, along with his long-time collaborators John Cage and Robert Rauschenburg, was one of the most innovative forces in art over the past century. He died at the age of 90, little more than a year ago. To work in his studio and pay homage to his extensive, ground-breaking career is the highest honor for us all.
While we've raised a sufficient number of funds to develop the work and premier it in San Francisco, its extremely expensive to fly the entire 10-person company (5 dancers, 1 choreographer, 1 composer, 1 lighting designer, 1 costume designer and technical assistant) across the country. For your support, we are offering a number of rewards at a variety of funding levels. All funders will have their name appearing in the NY program and on our website for the next year.
Hysteresis: Free from traditional structures and narratives, Hysteresis evokes an abstract dreamscape rich in complex shapes, relationships and points of meditation. To deliver a rich, visceral experience, unique to each audience member, the work presents them with unknown customs, languages, and symbols through movement, sound and the implementation of hysteretic systems. Fleeting patterns dissolve into autonomous polyrhythms and intersecting lines as five dancers slip through light - leaping, twisting, striking, and resisting rest.
We thank you for your support!
