Sieve is a short film about how memory intersects the physical world; and an exploration of how they inform, serve and fail each other.
This project has been a long time in coming, and in many ways is an extension of the themes I began working with eight or nine years ago while in school for my BFA. At the time I was creating a series of photo sculptures using old snap shots from my childhood {pictured below}. The pieces explored the connections between the ethereal & physical worlds: memory vs the family snapshot. But even as I was wrapping up my degree and finishing that phase of the project, I knew I was missing a significant voice in this dialogue. I knew I had to go home. I had to return to the actual places these photographs depicted, the actual spaces the memories took shape, find the story waiting for me in my long abandoned home town of Bayou La Batre, AL.
Seven years later I am finally ready to go back, and this October my DP {director of photography and all round co-conspirator} and I want to travel there and spend a week documenting the story that unfolds as I revisit my hometown for the first time in nearly 20 years.
The working title is Sieve, and this piece will be one part documentary, one part narrative, and wholly a testament to the process of discovering the changes time has laid on this one small town, breaking apart the patina of nostalgia I have built up, and sifting through the pieces to find whatever truth remains in tact after all these years.
The final project will be an 8-12 minute short film.

The funds will go toward airfare, gas, food, lodging & a small number of supplies needed. The breakdown of the necessities is below but we'd really like to raise upwards of $3,000 to give us some room to pay at least a small stipend to the artists that will be needed to complete the project: my DP, a musician for the soundtrack, editor, etc, and give this project as much room to live and breathe as possible.
Flight $400
