A mugger meets his match on a Central Park bench.
We're thrilled by how successful this kickstarter campaign has been thus far. Thanks so much to everyone who's supported. Now, we'd like to go even further...
We've got two weeks left and with more contributions, we are able to rent the Canon 5D Mark II Digital SLR camera, instead of a Canon Camcorder that shoots in HD, which we have now. The benefits of the 5D include higher picture quality, exchangeable lenses, and numerous settings for optimum functionality. Basically, it means we can make a better movie.
So keep up the good lovin', and spread the word.
What Is MUG?
As it stands right now, MUG is a play. What we want to do is make it into a movie.
What’s MUG about?
MUG is about a Central Park mugging gone completely awry. As night falls over New York City, a mugger spots a young man in a suit sitting alone on a park bench. He thinks it’s a done deal. However, this “muggee” is armed with an arsenal of dark secrets. Tables turn and guns are drawn as we learn the mugger truly has the loot ripe for the mugging and just might lose it all.
Where does MUG come from?
The first draft of MUG was written by Matthew Jellison in the Spring of 2006 when he actually got mugged. It wasn’t that big a deal. But in the weeks after that incident, Matthew thought about this man who got away with twenty bucks and an iPod. Why was he out there taking things from perfect strangers? Threatening their lives? What was his story? Those questions led to a two week writing period that produced MUG.
Two years later, MUG was produced at the North Carolina School of the Arts, his classmate and great buddy, Andrew Jernigan, took on the project as director. The following summer, the play was produced in NYC at the International Midtown Theater festival. Aaron Gonzalez, another School of the Arts alumnus, directed the play and cast classmate Billy Magnussen (As the World Turns) to play the role of the Muggee.
Why a movie?
Making a movie is making an invitation. We’re inviting our audience to come up close to these two characters and see their intentions, their struggles, their inner lives; to sit on that bench with them. The dialogue and action is already cinematic in nature. We will heighten the tension by using the intimacy of the camera to bring out suspenseful moments, offering flashbacks, and utilizing illustrative angles. We are inviting you to be a part of bringing the thrilling excitement of this play to life for everyone to see.
Why we need your Help.
Making a movie like MUG is tough. Making any movie is tough. We want it to be as good as it can be. Which means we want it to be great!!! Being great means we can spare no expense. We’ve got until May, when we carry out our three-day shoot. So by then we need to raise as much money as possible to pay for all of this stuff:
- The best crew we can get: In order to make a good movie, you need a great crew. And we want these individuals to feel that their greatness is appreciated. Which is why no member of our crew will go unpaid. We need to hire grips, lighting, camera ops, production assistants, and an assistant director.
- Our Intrepid Actors: Ian and Ro are two fine, fine actors. We want to give them what they deserve, both in a script they can play with, and financially.
- Lights: It’s a nighttime shoot and we want it to look REAL good.
- A Bench and a Lampost: We can’t film in Central Park itself but we can do the next best thing, and that is, recreate Central Park… in upstate New York.
- Food: Full tummies mean happy people. And we want everybody on set happy.
- Costumes, make-up, etc.
- Film for the camera.
- Rental Vans to carry actors, crew, and equipment to our upstate location.
- Lots and lots of pages of paper: We will need to print out forms and scripts over and over and over again. This all costs a ton.
- Post production: This includes an editor, and sound designer.
- And much, much more.
We need your help to raise by $5,000 by March 25th so that we can make a great, great movie. Any amount you can give will be a gargantuan help, and we’ve got some awesome incentives. So, please, help us out today. In the words of the mugger, “gimme what you got!!!”
