Wisdom: Realizing the Dakota Landscape seeks to reveal knowledge contained by the altered landscape of Mountrail, North Dakota.
In my work I study the connections we as individuals make with history and heritage. For this film I want to look at this in relation to a landscape and bodies that are constantly being erased. I plan to travel to New Town, North Dakota the site where three small towns were flooded after the construction of the Garrison dam was completed in 1953.
The watery ruins of Van Hook, Sanish, and Garrison now stand as monuments to those who abandoned a harsh and unforgiving landscape. Still, the land reveals the changes it has undergone. Treetops poke through the waters surface exposing the history beneath. I seek to capture these alterations using Super 8 film to cut historical documentation against contemporary horizons.
Note: The footage shown above is a digital sketch shot as an example of the landscape and does not reflect the aesthetic of my super 8 footage.
